Seems to be a ubiquitous trend across suburbia. Pretty depressing looking neighborhoods IMO. The types of places you never see kids out in the yard playing or riding their bikes around the neighborhood. Perhaps neurotic parents have similarly shitty taste in home decor.

Nah, my 'hood is overrunning with kids, sidewalks, dog walkers, and trees. It's just that the 28 pages of design guidelines frighten some homeowners into thinking that only "bland" will pass architectural review. I painted my shutters bright blue-green (Sherwin Williams "ionian", the color of deep water over a sandy bottom) and had to explain to another neighbor that color was allowed...no covenant or restriction prohibited using something bright on the shutters and front door.

But people are freakin' sheep. One person puts up an arched-top half-glass double front door, suddenly every new house on the same street has the same damn front door. There is one contractor building in my area who puts a walkthru shower in every single one of his houses. So now it's a local cliche, rather than an interesting feature. (And those walkthru showers are COLD in an airconditioned house.)

WHY TWO LIVING ROOMS?! Why not one large workable kitchen?!

The large workable kitchen I can give you...but two living rooms is a must. Not a fan of just about every new build with a cavernous great room/living room/kitchen and a wing of bedrooms. Need a more formal living room AND a den/media room to be able to get away. I would lose my shite in a house with one large living area. I realize it is just a preference and totally against the modern grain but so be it.

Wow. So posters aren't allowed to express an opinion that isn't 100% positive or congratulatory without being attacked personally. Good stuff.

I didn't say that.

Everyone has different taste. But some of the more negative comments likely come from losers.

this is why i moved out of my HOA nazi-hood.

we were putting in a deck and had 2 or 3 nosy neighbors call the HOA and ask them to stop us even though we had already gotten approval.

people just like to hate.

I so agree. Put in a pair of glass french doors between the LR and the dining/kitchen. I can close it off if I don't want anyone wandering into the kitchen, or if I don't want to listen to the TV. I don't need a separate formal dining area, so I turned that into a second living/"quiet" room w/books. I really don't like the completely open floorplan. It's too hard for multiple, non-overlapping activities to go on at the same time. Gotta make the house fit your actual life as it is lived...

Not really against the grain once you go further north and venture out of the land of ranch style homes.

That's looks nice and functional to me. I can't believe people, especially males, not in the home decor business get so worked up about what a space looks like.

Ya know, I picked mine based on all of the covenants. Lived for too many years on the same block with a bunch of trashy fools. Five able bodied adults lived in the house, but no one could be bothered to paint it. Or put the fence back up after a branch fell on it. Or do anything other than cut the grass (forget cutting down the vines growing all over one end of the house). So I'm happy to have some local enforcement & control...

Seeing photos like these kitchen pics makes me seriously question the backsplashes I just put around my kitchen. I just hope I don't have to sell the house.

I prefer yours to pman's, and I'm not really even saying I hate his.

Right

And since I'm the only one living there the open floor plan works great for me

You're right.. I do like it because the room where the TV/games/etc. are isn't used in all situations. That is kinda "our" place, and people may come into it if they are visiting with the intent of watching something, but quick visitors never enter that room. It is too deep into the house for visitors to even really make it in there. They only visit on the couches in the living room that is attached to the kitchen.

But I'd still sacrifice the extra living room for a better kitchen

its definitely a balance.

the area we moved to has mostly 5+ acre lots so that puts space between houses (ours is only a tad over 2 acres) but we back up to the wilderness so technically i like to pretend our backyard goes forever.

Exactly.

My Mom doesn't have a fridge actually in the kitchen. There's a laundry room attached the kitchen with a large separate pantry, 1/2 bath and small office. She moved the washer/dryer to the office and put her two fridges and upright freezer in the laundry room. That's where she likes it. The contractor told the architect that he forgot to put a fridge space in the drawing. Architect told him they didn't believe in them.

It's not like she has to walk a mile to the fridges. Probably about 3 yards from the stovetop. She'd rather have more counterspace and cabinets and 3 large ovens with the warming drawer than the fridges in there. Works for she and my Dad. My sister just redid her kitchen and wanted more of the same, so she moved the fridge around the corner where you walk into the kitchen from the playroom. The other fridge is just across from it in the laundry room.

Different strokes for different folks. You have to live there and function there. Do what makes you happy.
