student loans aren't necessarily bad, but it's the assholes who get worthless degrees and take out large amounts of loans that they will never be able to pay off

Too damn much.
The only silver lining is that I owe less than my annual gross. But only just.

Zero ever. Wife had $1k or $2k, got rid of those immediately.

None, but my long-term gf has enough for both of us. Her parents are slightly less fiscally responsible than mine.

My parents weren't poor

$15K. Down from $45K. Locked in at somewhere around 2%. Been waiting for a decade to hit a big payday and knock that shite out. Thought I had it back in 2007, but fricked up and got the wife pregnant. It'll be gone one way or the other in another 8 years with just minimum payments, so that's good.

Graduated in 1987 (long arse time ago) and had $0 thanks to mom and dad. I ran the numbers one day and figured they spent around 25K on everything college for me.
My wife had about 6K when we married. It pissed my dad off because he wanted nothing like that for me. We paid them off in about 4 years.
My daughter is going to school out of state and has an 18K a year scholarship. Unfortunately the out of state tuition fee is 21K a year. She incurred 3K her first year and is working to not barrow any her second year.
Student loans are evil. I empathize with those who have to deal with them.

GI bill for undergrad. If I decide to go back, it will be online education while I work. Or get a partial retirement from my current job and then rack up the loans for medical school.

This. Had scholarships for college. Won many and some other cash paying academic awards in med school. Kept living expenses down. And ended up getting local hospital to pay the $30,000 I did owe. Wife owed $32k for college and pharmacy school. Paid it off first year I worked.

You think student loans are evil and empathize those who have to deal with them, but you won't pay 3k dollars for your own daughter to go to college?

$40k by the time I graduate in May. Interest is around 9%, so I'm going to be living cheap for two years while trying to pay it off ASAP.

I have been deferring 13k for a while now just waiting to pay on it. Govt tells me the other day I can redo my payment plan with payments as low as $0 a month. Called it's legit, waiting on approval, also got with a friend who did this. Basically after how many years it's all over and forgiven. Hope it works out.

I would hate to be in that situation....

$288k, all from attending medical school as an out of state student. Plus accrued interest from forbearance years in residency.

Mine = 0? I'm 48 though.
My daughter's? Not real sure. Not just a ton, but she'll start law school in about a year and half, and I PRAY she gets into a great/prestigious public law school.
