Very slow and boring.

Awesome movie...
It's not an action movie set in a sci-fi setting.
A science fiction movie dealing with grand ideas.

The transition from the Dawn of Man to the year 2001 is one of the best edits/jump cuts in movie history.

People who get all pissy when others don't like what they like need to remove the seats from their bicycles.

It's also fricking boring as shite
There are some parts of the movie that are slooowww and dragged on too long, but I enjoyed it.

That was a major symbolic point Kubrick was trying to convey. Realistic space travel is a slow and extremely precise process. It also symbolizes Man's insignificance in the Universe. Thus, there is a need for humans to continue evolving.

Prepare to be amazed at the directing an camera work, bored for the most part and having a WTF moment at the end.

Its amazing what they did with what they had to work with back then.
Very well done.

You must of misunderstood me. I've heard from people that watched it say it was boring and didn't have an interesting story like most sci fi. My understanding is that it's loved because of its visuals?
Kubrick was visionary in his story-telling in this one, but it's much more of a high-minded art film that happens to take place within the Sci-Fi realm. He literally beats the viewer over the head with his long, plodding imagery. Stan, space is big and empty. We get it.

That is true. I will tell the OP this though...I went into it sort fo expecting to be bored with it, and I cam eout of it loving it much more than I ever expected to.
There are boring parts, sure, but they at least make some sense within the movie.
I did FFWD through the black opening and kaleidoscope ending though. I didn't need 4 straignt minutes of that shite to get the point.

I did not like it. I get that space travel takes a long time. I also get that driving across the country takes a long time too, but I don't see the point in watching that real time if absolutely nothing is happening between getting from point A to point B. The long prologue space travel scene just seems like one big practical joke ala Andy Kaufman. You will keep asking yourself, "how much longer could this BS go on?"

That black opening is part of the point of the movie. Same with the trippy visuals near the end. You really need to open your brain with this movie but its all worth it.

Saw it when it came out. Slept through part of it. Shouldn't have gone to the Bengal first.

I can't think of one that's close. That is just so genius on so many levels that I don't know where to start.

Oh I know. I just didn't need to be beat over the head with it for 4 minutes to get it.

Well, yes, the whole point of the black screen is to "beat you over the head" with it for 4 or so minutes. You (the audience) are meant to stare at the black screen (the monolith) in the same way the apes and humans stare at it for 4 or so minutes when they come across it.
Could Kubrick have made the same point in 30 seconds? Maybe. But, would it have been as thematically effective/relevant? Probably not.
