Yes, the rule was finally changed. I think it will help, but it's going to take a while

This is horseshite. LSP shouldn't have to cover NOLA and the FQ cause NOPD can't handle it. Handle your own shite NOPD.

When I saw the thread title my first thought was "Oh, you mean they are paid so little that they have to walk the streets (i.e. hook) to make ends meet?"

They were all parked near the courthouse and I saw a ton around there as I work near there. I was wondering what was going on... Brennan's is doing major construction and there were news crews everywhere... I guess to cover both stories. I have never felt safer walking down Royal St.!

Manpower is the excuse.

That's cause the mayor and police chief ran all of the good ones out. I know a bunch that went to jp, state or private sector.

What is the NOPD paying these days?

I believe starting patrolman pay is currently $36,750. I'm not sure if that is for a 40 hr week, or includes some scheduled overtime.

I think NOPD is authorized to have 1575 cops. They currently have under 1200. Manpower is a problem...

Under the current arrangement, LSP will be here through Labor Day weekend and the 50 troopers will be paid out of LSP's budget.

Shitty job, shitty pay, residency rule, and leadership that can't wait to throw them under the bus equals low manpower. If residency rule was finally abolished then that's a start, but it has to be formally permanently abolished and not simply suspended.

And people wonder why there's a manpower issue.

I was told today, by people who would know, that NOPD is losing an officer every 60 hours.

Funny thing is armed robberies occur every night in the quarter because there aren't enough police. But a shooting that more police couldn't have prevented results in a larger presence.

Bottom line NOPD only have a handful of officers on duty in many of the districts at night it's a joke.

So far in CY 2014 NOPD has lost about 3 officers per week. The next recruiting class presently has around 30 candidates in it; it won't graduate until early 2015. Not all of these 30 will make it to the finish line. The thin blue line in NOLA gets thinner and more blue every month.

Scary.

residency rule

I'm sorry to hear that New Orleans has one. Does it apply to cops who don't take their patrol vehicle home?

I'm old, so it's a little bit hard for me to grasp what living on $36,750 (gross) would be like these days. I'm not sure what other PDs pay, but it it doesn't sound like a ridiculously low amount of money to me.

To gain a little perspective, I checked the New Orleans census data:
Per Capita Money Income = 26,131.
Household Income = 36,681

You couldn't pay me enough to be a cop. I wouldn't want to have to put up with all the BS that they have to deal with. But what should a rookie cop get paid?

Just looked at LSP.org

A trooper trainee earns $2,967/mo while attending the LSP Academy. Salary increases to $3,408 after one year - That equates to $40,896/yr.

Maybe $36,750 base isn't so bad after all.

Mardi Gras, Super Bowl, and other special events; but I don't think you see them on foot patrol 365 days a year.
