But they haven't gotten their raise in a few years. They stand to get a 40% raise on base salary though. Also the overtime is pretty good for those guys. Because they work 12 hour shifts there are plenty of days off which they can go and get a transport or lace.

All things being equal, most sane people would choose to work for LSP rather than NOPD. My point is that the differential between the two agencies starting pay isn't what it used to be. Twenty years ago ago, a State Trooper started at about $10,000 or $12,000 more than a NOPD recruit. Not so much any more...

NOPD officers supplement their base pay with OT and "detail" work, just like LSP Troopers work highway construction sites.

Who's got a 40% base pay raise coming to them? I've got a State Trooper friend with three kids who'll be thrilled to have some extra tuition money!

I know 2 NOPD officers/detectives who were SWAT and specialty divers who just jumped the force to JP and State. The new detail BS was the last straw

The dumb thing about the St.Police presence now is that after Essence, the Quarter is always slow, i.e. very few tourists as no conventions will book N.O. in the heat of the summer mths, till Labor Day wkend. And that is when they are supposed to leave??? Part of the problem is no doubt the smaller numbers of NOPD on duty, but as well, the POS who used to stay in their own areas are now migrating to where the money is, and those POS all have guns & no value for human life.

The Federal Consent Decree limits the amount of OT and private detail hours a cop can work. I believe the new max is 36 hours per week, of which only 24 can be detail work.

Among the problems with the old system was that cops were working cash details for 50 or 60 hrs a week and catching up on their rest during their 40 hour (actual) work week. Bars were getting protected just fine, but streets weren't getting patrolled as they should.
