You are such a hipster.

Anyway, back to this thread.

There is no reason to pit one sport against the other, this country is big enough to where they can all be supported without one eating the other.

Everybody needs to chill out and just enjoy the World Cup.

DC also has the shittiest stadium in MLS by far and has been the worst franchise for like five years now.

I'm still amazed at how far that franchise has fallen. I thought they would be the Yankees of MLS and have 7 or 8 title by now.

They have the most titles (can't remember how many) but none are recent. They are getting a new stadium in the next year or so.

I don't see how this is news honestly, like saying Olympics outdraws both..... Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, this match was on every tv of every bar, it was at a great time, and outside of Sunday night baseball it had no competition

Yeah I watched it for about 15 minutes, which is about 14 more minutes than I spent watching the nba finals.

I think this is more about people having another excuse to party and get drunk than it is caring about soccer or the USA.

The NBA has the best basketball players in the world. The NHL has the best hockey players in the world. The MLS has no where near the best soccer players in the world.

The MLS should work on becoming the most popular soccer league in America before worrying about being as popular as the NBA or NHL.

well, to be fair, the domestic leagues of brazil, argentina, holland, portugal, etc aren't the best of the best leagues, but nobody questions whether soccer is the most popular sport in those countries. in soccer, there are only so many elite leagues. it's an accepted scenario when your domestic league is a "minor league" farm league for bigger ones.

this is just one of those cognitive disconnects with american fans. international soccer fans are much more realistic and they accept a tiered sporting landscape. americans have this almost irrational belief in being #1 or bust

From the first page:

It's because it's USA. People like watching hyped up events where the USA competes against the world.

Don't flatter yourselves, soccer fans. They aren't watching because they love soccer.

Millions of people also watch ski jumping or water polo once every 4 years...

Okay, let me explain to you where soccer is. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world, correct? On par with the NBA or NFL, correct? Well, here are some U.S. viewership numbers:

The match between Manchester United and Manchester City was the second-most watched Premier League telecast ever in the U.S. with 852,000 viewers.

The 4 matches that made up the Premier League's Opening Weekend averaged 356,000 viewers.

MLS games probably get more viewers than that...

Not a perfect comparison, but the highest priced DC United season ticket is $1,729 and the cheapest Washington Cap ticket is around $1,300 for nosebleeds.

Certainly not perfect. I'd be hard pressed to call it a valid comparison at all given the difference in games played. I think you have a point that could be made, but you did absolutely nothing here to make it.

He doesn't get that the WC is more popular than the Olympics now.

The Olympics only turn the dial in the US if Americans are competing for gold. The average American gives zero fricks about ski jumping or water polo if someone from Latvia or Bosnia are in the finals.

In this case, we aren't even really playing for 1st prize, and the popularity is through the roof. Nobody is going to a bar or a park with thousands of other people to watch Shaun White tear up the halfpipe. The WC is a phenomenon in the country right now and it has overtaken the Olympics as far as interest goes.

This is a ballsy claim considering the London Olympics were the most watched event in US TV history.

Yea I know. But until this year they've been awful by every measure for awhile now. My point is, I wouldn't judge all of MLS by DC.

This is what he gets and I completely agree with him. And maybe not water polo but I never miss ski jumping, regardless of who's in it. Then again, perhaps I'm not the "average American".
