How much is too much? How did you know what the dog was capable of doing/not doing before just bringing it along for runs?

Also, the OT is full of people that can out endure their dogs aerobic capabilities.

i usually stop right when he starts throwing up and shitting himself. then i slow it down to just a slow jog

No dog should go along until it reaches adult age

I take my dogs 1.5 miles each.
Normally by the end they are running a little behind me.
If a dog cant run anymore they will stop.

I run a quarter mile with my dog, then walk the next quarter mile. I normally repeat this about three or four times. The only part about it my dog does not like is that she's doesn't have a chance to smell other dogs' shite.

Just like you do with people. When the dog gets tired, it stops running. Pretty simple, huh?

Ran 11 with my lab sized thinner build mutt, the other day. I was making loops in the neighborhood and he will pull for the house if he is done. He will do it in hot weather, but in cool he will go all day. Never limps or is sore, vet says it is fine.

i just started running with her. of course i'd walked her a bunch of times before i ran with her, so i knew she was in decent shape. just take walking breaks every mile or so at first and keep an eye on the dog for heavy panting plus how willing/reluctant it is to continue running.
i find that my dog cannot keep up when it's very hot outside. if it's cold, i'm going to get tired before she does.
good luck.

Not all the time. I know a dude that ran his step dad's prized lab to death. Dumbass was on a 4-wheeler and the dog was following him. Ran it about 6 miles till it killed over dead. Bad deal.

some dog breeds will run to the point of exhaustion and death to please their owner.
It's in their DNA not to stop

Mine sprints for the first mile, then jogs at a good pace for the next mile, and about 2.5 miles in he decides that walking and smelling stuff is way more enjoyable than running. Damn thing doesn't know how to pace himself.

My wife feels more confortable when running with our dog, rather than running alone. My wife typically runs only a mile at a time. Easy work for my dog, especially in the winter.

Remember back in the day Redneck posted that he nearly killed his dog running around lakes.

You should be able to tell how far they can go pretty easily. Start now while it's still cool to build his/her endurance before it gets hot. And when it gets hot you'll really have to watch out. My lab-mix is black, and he gets really hot. In the summer before we go for a jog I'll hose him down so the water will evaporate to cool him off. I also put a backpack on him with a water bottle on each side. Gives him a job to do and helps keep him cool.
