The first time I ran with my dog, she nearly broke my collar bone. She caught the scent of a cat and cut across me with no regard for human life.

Same here, except I was trying out riding a bike with my dog. He was a puppy and had a TON of energy. He pulled me off the bike. That was the last time we tried that.

I never had the courage to try the bike thing. We live in a semi-rural area where several dogs free roam. Everything taller than four inches gets pissed on with regularity. The urge to smell is often to great for my dog.

My dog runs with me. Only problem is he comes to a complete stop to take a dump about a half mile in and it takes me by surprise every time.
ETA: I have a lab that never gets tired. He will swim until he is exhausted. I thought one time I was gonna have to jump in for rescue.

You need to start slowly just like you would a person. Start with a mile for a few times, then two, etc. I bike ride with my dogs and some can go 3 miles, while others only a mile. Of course, the temp matters to them as much as to you. There is a noticeable decline in their ability/desire when it gets hot. We never go in the summer unless it's very early AM.

How much is too much? How did you know what the dog was capable of doing/not doing before just bringing it along for runs?
Take it on shorter adventures before running a marathon with them. That being said, my 28# boykin can run 3 miles with me in the dead of summer without much of an issue. I exercise her year-round and in all weather conditions. The key is to keep them hydrated and cool. If it is really hot, I'll hose her down before we run and make sure she drinks water.

My black lab, Pete, runs with me outside of hunting season in the morning. We do 5 miles and he freaking loves it. Goes inside after, drinks a bowl of water, and crashes for about an hour.

Most i ever did with the pooch is 5 miles. In my opinion, you need to build them up to that kind of mileage and NEVER run with a dog in moderate to high heat.
Some dogs will stop when they are tired, but some breeds have been known to run themselves in to cardiac arrest, so be careful and bring them water for longer runs.

Yeah, you really just have to watch out for the heat. Like I said, get going now so he's in shape by the time summer rolls around. Then when it gets hot, I either hose the dog down first, or have him carry ice-water in his backpack, or both.
Edit: And I don't go as far as some others in this thread. I'd probably be considered OT-fat, and we alternate jogging/walking each block. Not sure on distance, but we do this for 30-45 minutes, so I'd guess no more than 2 miles.

I run with my border collie along the lakefront in nola daily. I'll never outlast her.

The only thing that holds my dog back is the concrete and it's temperature at times. Burned his feet the one time and felt like absolute shite for not paying attention to it.

In a Alaska dogs take their owner for a run. Just saying

I run 4 miles a few times a week with my lab.

I'd love to bike with my dog, but he's so excited to go he sprints the first quarter to half mile, i'm talking I barely keep up with him on the bike sprint. He actually doesn't allow me to get in front of him. Then he'll get tired and lag behind me the next half mile and i can see that he's pooped and only keeping up b/c he doesn't want me to leave him.
I don't know how to get him to pace himself. If we do it several days in a row, the pads on his feet get ripped up from the street as well.
Do'nt see how i could ever run with him. He would be crying the whole time wanting to go faster.
And as others have stated, he likes to come to a complete stop during a sprint to take a crap. Does it every time.

Dumbass was on a 4-wheeler and the dog was following him. Ran it about 6 miles till it killed over dead. Bad deal.
Never understood the thought process with running a dog to and from the blind when you are on a wheeler. I have seen Labs jack up their legs running in the dark trying to stay up with the wheeler because they can't see and then almost spaz out after a ton of work picking up ducks and then have to run back after the hunt.
If my dog didn't have room on the wheeler, I made 2 trips.

Hopefully you fellas don't pass any cops on your runs.

Makes more sense than those people who ride around with their dog in the passenger seat.

I take my dogs 1.5 miles each.
I wish. The only time my dogs get worn out is if it's really hot.
During the winter...I'm screwed. I'll take them for 2-3 miles and it doesn't even phase them.
