Looking to get a youth shotgun for 9 year old Dong. He has experience shooting .22 as well as 20 gauge single shot, which kicks like a mule and he loves it. Leaning towards the 870 Express due to durability and it's what i grew up with. However, I am hesitant to purchase anything from Remington and I'm open to suggestions.
TIA

Proper shotgun shells can go a long way in reducing recoil. They probably will not cycle in an auto, but RST Shotgun shells are mail order and great...

I bought my son a reduced length o/u, 20 gauge from CZ. 24" barrels and 13" lop. I do a lot of bird hunting, when he is big enough to carry it, he will carry it open so I know it is unloaded and safe...

My wife had a Franchi 620. It was a sweet shotgun. She insisted on me selling it before we had kids. Really wish I had it back. If I remember correctly it was around $600 new.

We have a Mossberg .410 and a also the .20 gauge. My last two trailers used the .20 gauge at 9. They shot clays with it as well. Find a friend with one and let him try it. Great little shotgun.

I recently bought an H&R pardner youth 20ga. The op system is an 870 clone with synthetic stock, its cheaper also. The action isn't quite as smooth but will loosen up with use.

I have the 870 youth and 870 youth compact. Both are excellentguns for my 12 and 9 year olds.
Check the compact out. It also has shims to adjust length of pull as they grow.

I am as well but for the kids i'd do it. I'd even be happier if I could find a used one

Browning BPS Micro w 22" barrel or a Winchester youth model if you can find it.

Remington 870 youth express. I have one I still use for all my shotgunning needs. Can't beat a 21" barrel for bunnies going 90 mph through the briars or anything that moves fast through the brush. It's also lighter, shorter butt and trigger pull, can use 3" shells when he gets older. The butt can be shimmed but I'm 6'2" and the factory length is just fine for me.

My 8 year old will get a youth maverick 88 pump 20g for him to torture. Not very expensive and
He will use it for everything till he is old enough to pick thru all my guns to take what he wants.

Not sure the status of the company these days, but I have had an Ithaca youth 20 gauge for years. Great gun, light, easy kick, fixed choke.

How much that set ya back wick?
My little guy is only 2 yo now. Got him a AR22 back when thing were getting shaky for the AR's. and I'd like to get him a little 20 gauge over under youth model but I don't think I want to drop more than 500 on it.

what choirboy and wick say....
but.....with that being said....
every kid is different....
started out little choupique with a 870 youth.. and it kicked way too much.. don't ask how old he was went with a semi auto.. only mistake.. not getting a BETTER semi auto....
I really like the twice barrel for a kid.. though.. but I am a twice barrel fan..... even though the days of my shoulder taking the water fowl pounding with a OU or SxS... are coming to an end.....
Lil Choupique bought a yildiz youth 20 ga as his woodcock knockaround gun.. and he likes it a lot...
I would.. get your KID to shoot some of the different ones and then decide...
