Just because a dog LOOKS like a black mouth cur, doesn't mean it is one. There's a million combinations of dog breeds that will make a dog that looks like that one.

In fact, a study was done where a bunch of dogs were left on an island to interbreed for several generations, and the result was a lot of dogs that look like that one.

A raw dawg

I wouldn't worry too much about the bite. I have had a dog, a cat, and two people bite me. Hospital told me that a person bite is the most prone to infection, followed by a cat, and dogs bites rarely cause any trouble.

A good one?

Actually that is very BMC like behavior. Very protective. Those things can go full bat-shite crazy defensive of their people.

yea im not too worried, my old man wanted to go get it checked out but the owner said she was up to date on her shots and i know their mouths hold very little germs. i dont blame the dog really, she was being protective, i blame the owner more cuz after the fact he said shes done it before. he should have chained her up earlier.

Looks like a Rhodesian Ridgeback maybe or some mix of it?

Or maybe just a mutt?

Got a island for sale in south Louisiana forsale real cheap.

Dude, go have that dog taken in or have the owner prove the dog is up on it's shots. All they need to do is get a copy from there vet. You are a fool taking those peoples word.

No, it's a biting mutt.

No. No, they didn't. They were smaller with a rougher coat. Tails were curved and they were prick eared with narrower muzzles. I do agree that the dog in question may not be BMC, but the considering the prevelance of the breed in the south I would say that the chances of it being are pretty damn good. Kind of a trick question considering a "cur" isn't much more then a mutt anyway.

My first thought was Rhodesian Ridgeback. To OP Did it have raised hair on it's back? Constantly; not just when it bit you? kinda like a mohawk?

I really like those dogs.

Deinition of cur is "mixed breed", I believe a large amount of curs or "working dogs" have similar traits. I had a Catahoula that was spotted and had glass eyes; same litter had two "black and tans" and one was red with blue eyes. The bitch looked just like this dog and the stud was pure black.

Black mouths are usually larger in frame, have a yellow or tan coat and a black muzzle. The frame is small for a black mouth.

It doesn't matter, it is some mix. There are plenty dogs out there that fit the mold. Old Yeller was a Black Mouth or Mountain Cur.

Most that use them as working dogs, don't really care about this. The only ones who really do are breeders and people trying to make money.

If it is strong in body, equally strong jaws, large webbed feet, and works, people will call it a Black Mouth.

Maybe I should have said, "very similar" but yes, yes they did. Feral dogs, left on their own, will look very similar to that in a few generations. Depending on how wide the gene pool is they start with, there will be some variations, but basically. Dingos are an example.

just learned this useless fact last week helping my son do a report. The dog in the Old Yeller book was a black mouth cur. The one used in the movie was a mix of a yellow lab and a mastiff.
