NFL set to look more like CFL?

The National Football League is looking to the Canadian Football League for ideas on how to make the game safer – including widening the field of play, according to a report in the National Football Post.
According to the report, the NFL competition committee considered widening the field at meetings last year and speculation is they will toss around the possibility again. CFL fields are 195 feet wide, while NFL fields are 160 feet wide, a difference of 35 feet. The thinking is that the extra space will reduce congestion in the middle of the field, leading to fewer hits and, by extension, fewer serious head injuries.
quote:
“I’m not so sure we shouldn’t think about widening the field,” former competition committee member Bill Polian said. “It’s a radical idea, but I think it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game.”

Just shut the league down already.
If the lawyers are coming on that strong about the head injuries and safety that they are thinking of completely changing the game then just blow it all up and start from scratch.

Interesting to hear the back and forth with player safety. Almost everyone agrees that changes can and should be made to further the safety of the players, but every single time someone makes a proposal, OMFG, THEY'RE GOING TO RUIN THE GAME, RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE...etc.
You want safety or you don't.. If people want it, you can't bitch every time a possible solution is so much as discussed.

it is a shame the art of a formed tackle is lost in today's NFL. Instead you have DB's going for the knockout blow every time or a half assed arm tackle by a linebacker who is out of position to make the tackle anyway because they were covering a TE or RB... okay maybe the LB gets a pass here

I watched rugby for the first time today and was blown away at how they'd tackle. It was so beautiful.

I think we should still first just see how the current changes have any impact.. The game today is nothing like even just 10 years ago.. including advances in protection gear.
They need to hold the heck up a minute. There has been plenty of changes made. Lets see studies down the road first.

Want to make the game safer while still maintaining its integrity? Require wrapping up or at least attempting to wrap up in tackles. No more "tackling" by launching your body at the ball carrier.
You can still deliver a hard, intimidating hit, but you're less likely to have helmet to helmet shots and bodies aren't flying around with guys landing on their head as often.
Penalize dangerous play, with repeat offenders getting ejected.
Enforce the wrap up rule at all levels of football so that it no longer becomes a problem.
In short, make it a rule to play in a fundamentally sound manner.

Exactly. You either wrap up or can shove a guy out by the sideline.
Ohand make tthem sign a waiver before playing... No need to make this shite into a 60-55 game every week by completely altering the game.

I like the idea of a yellow/red card type system. Launch yourself into a WR's head over the middle? Straight "red", you're done for the day.

Wouldn't MORE space cause MORE injuries? More space to run in my head equals more space to build up speed for a bigger hit

In rugby, a yellow card gets you ten minutes in the sin bin.
Imagine if a player in the NFL had to sit for a full quarter for foul play? You do something utterly stupid with 5 minutes left in the third quarter, you're out and can't rejoin the action until five minutes are left in the fourth quarter. Oh, and the 15 yard penalty is still enforced, so you've REALLY hurt your team at that point.

I don't have any faith that the owners would support this. 35 feet of additional field would mean less space for some premium seats close to the field, right? Would the owners vote to modify the game in such a way that directly impacts their bottom line?

It's my favorite thing about rugby. They're tackling is just perfect.

Still wouldn't help the linemen who hit each other every play in games and in practice.

Agreed. I can't see something like this passing. It would result in renovations in many of the league's stadiums requiring significant investments.

Wider field could be fun, honestly. I'm a fan of big plays and that would leave more room to do so.

i'm not sure about how rugby minutes work, but i think the clock keeps running, yeah?
a quarter in football could last 45 minutes...you can't have players just sitting out 45 minutes in the middle of a game. that's just asking for injuries when they come back in

wider field changes radically hte type of athletes teams would have to recruit. players will get smaller and faster
