quote:

"The minimum should be 16 teams,'' Leach told Fox Sports' Lisa Horne. “I think 32 is better than 16, but I think 64 would be ideal.

"You could cut the regular season down to 10 games, but guarantee everybody 12 games. In the end, the champion would play 16 games."

But what about school?

"That's a bunch of foolishness. Basketball players go to school, volleyball players go to school, baseball players go to school and they play a lot more games than football [players do]."

16 games of pounding for college kids seems pretty intense. Teams already wear out with 12 games. It's basically be who can make it through with the least amount of injuries.

You think a 16 seed doesn't stand a chance against a 1 seed in basketball, try football.

That's what a lot of HS are playing, but a 64 team playoff is an absolute joke. That renders the regular season meaningless. A 10 game schedule is also a nonstarter, teams will not give up those extra games. That would leave teams with 1 OOC game.

Yeah, let's put over half the teams in the FBS in a post-season tournament.

I can foresee a 64 team playoff of sorts.

Four 16 team conferences. Two divisions each. You play every team in your division (7 games), 2 teams from the other division (9 games), and 3 out of conference games (12 total games). The other division teams rotate every year, so you play every team every 4 years, alternating one home/one away game a year.

The "playoffs" are as such:
-Round robin regular season with normal rules for tie breakers.
-Conference Championship game after regular season to determine Conference Champion.
-Four Conference Champions are ranked at the end of the conference championship game. No rankings prior to this.
-#1 vs. #4 (at #1 home stadium)
-#2 vs. #3 (at #2 home stadium)

-Winners play in the National Championship game.

teams 65-119 or whatever can continue on in the NCAA an be irrelevant. No one cares.

The new American College Championship Association (ACCA) becomes the new standard for which college athletics is based.

May as well add 8 teams to Division 1-A and have a 7 round, 128 team playoff.

Given that college basketball has three times the number of teams, the equivalent football tourney would be 24 teams, or 5 weeks. It would be exceedingly rare any team would play 5 weeks, as it would require a team seeded 9 or lower to make the title game.

Leach suggests dropping a regular season game, so a team would likely play no more than 15 games. LSU played 14 games last year. I fail to see a significant difference.

I mean, it's not IMPOSSIBLE

LA high schools play a 10 game regular season and a 32 team playoff in each division

No, he's doing what playoff proponents should all do. Haggle for more than you want, so when the NCAA budges, they budge just to the point you wanted them to begin with.

Leach probably wants 8 teams. Therefore, he "demands" more than 8.

NCAA: No playoff.
Leach: bullshite. I DEMAND a 32-team playoff.
NCAA: Alright, we'll give you 8. But THAT'S IT.
Leach: Fine, but you've screwed me over BIG TIME.
NCAA: *aside* Sucker.
Leach: *aside, same time* Sucker.

I can see a 16 team or 32 team playoff. I don't know what's so crazy about it.

It devalues the regular season. The teams in "others recieving votes" should not play for the NC.

This isn't basketball. The 8-16 teams wouldn't stand a chance.

There's 3 times as many D1 basketball teams.

I think 4 is perfect for FB

I agree with the second sentence, but I don't think that anything really ever devalues the regular season. The regular season is currently devalued for 90% of all teams by mid-September (assuming that the goal is to win the title). A playoff that is too far expanded doesn't devalue the regular season; it actually revalues it for most teams; what it does do is devalue those marquee matchups in November. Alabama/Auburn, Florida/FSU, Michigan/tOSU, etc...often those will be nothing more than exhibition games between teams who have already clinched playoff spots. That would blow.

Four is enough for me, but I could go to eight and be fine with it.

I agree that the bottom half teams wouldn't stand as much of a chance as in basketball, but there would still be upsets. There are games every year that a team with "no chance" win
