Unless a scholarship becomes available before then, Bates will spend his first season on LSU’s football team as a walk-on.

Bates had the option to “grayshirt,” which would have had him enrolling at LSU in January.

“He could have done a classic grayshirt,” said John Heaton, his stepfather, “but besides wanting to practice with the team, Houston wants to go into premed. To not start his classes until January would really set him back academically.”

Everyone can say what they want about Bates, but he's a true Tiger at heart. He really wants to be here and he'll be a good part of the locker room. Gotta respect him.

this...bigtime. we need more just like him. motivated...disciplined...teachable...and talented. the coach at Boise St. is making a living with kids like Bates whose 'impact" is felt on many levels.

I predict he'll redshirt as a walk-on and receive his scholly to play for 4 years next year.

Any idea how many walkons have earned scholarships with Les Miles?

I could be wrong but Bates should have gone to ULL where he could play. He doesn't seem like a SEC player.
