Attempted murder. They thought it was a human….those perps should not see the light of day again.
But Dems need their voters, so nothing will happen and our cities will continue to rot.

it really should be murder charges. I've never understood why the outcome changes the intent.

If Chris Hansen can get you put in the slammer with a fake 12 year old then I see no reason why this isn't attempted murder.

AI Overview
Yes, a person can be charged with and convicted of attempted murder if they shoot a mannequin while genuinely believing it is a real person. This legal principle, known as factual impossibility, dictates that if an individual has the intent to kill and takes a direct, substantial step toward committing the crime, they are liable, even if it was physically impossible to succeed.

+3
Intent and Belief: The core of the crime is the defendant's state of mind (mens rea). If they believe they are shooting a human, they possess the necessary intent for murder.
Case Precedent: A notable example is People v Dlugash, where the court ruled that if a defendant believes they are killing a person, they are guilty of attempt even if the victim was already dead. In 2017, a man in Nevada pleaded guilty to attempted murder after attacking a dummy, thinking it was a sleeping homeless person.
Substantial Step: Actively targeting, planning, and shooting (or stabbing/beating) the object is considered a "substantial step" toward commission of the crime.
Why the Charge Holds: The law focuses on the criminality of the intent, not the success of the outcome. As one expert noted, "The impossibility of it doesn't negate an attempt"

Growing up, at my friends house...
A guy across the street from him would put a mannequin is his pos van for the same reasons.
Somebody actually broke in and stole his mannequin though.
Then he had a sign in his yard saying he wanted his mannequin back with no questions asked.

He was just misunderstood. It was self defense. While breaking into the car, he feared for his life

Probably too much to expect that the police gather the forensic evidence for future prosecution
