Trump's strategy here is incomprehensibly ineffective

No serious person believes he is going to destroy an entire civilization. No serious person believes he would even go with the previous threat of destroying every power plant and bridge in the country.
When negotiating you overplay your hand to set an anchor. But you have to do it in a way that is somewhat believable. If it's complete fantasy and fiction then you haven't set a real anchor.
This is the equivalent of someone on that stupid pawn stars show trying to sell a Pokemon card for 3 billion dollars. It's so laughably stupid that no real anchor has been set for negotiation.
Optimistic view - there are likely real negotiations happening behind the scenes and this is just all theater.

Unfortunately I think we end up in an even worse position after today. My reasoning is that if the regime weathers today (especially if the bombing is as severe as we're implying), it's a rhetorical win for them. They spin it as taking the Americans' best shot and surviving while radicalizing people who are now suffering under our bombing campaign. They'll paint it as brutal foreign invaders providing justification for their decision to build a nuke. "Look how the great Satan attacks us, but Allah is on our side!" You have to remember we're dealing with extremist Muslims, not a logical enemy who fears death.
