Would you give up a 1st 5 years down the road if it meant unloading Poole?

I don’t see much of a way to be able to unload him without attaching a good player or a 1st round pick (1 pick may not even be enough). This team could very well look the exact same as this years unless they unload Zion, Trey or Bey. Herb’s value is in the tank since he fouls out in 15 minutes so he wouldn’t be enough to unload that insane contract Poole has. I really hope Fears can take a step up this offseason and I hope someone keeps Queen off the buffet line and in the weight room because he’s looked worse and worse as the year has gone on and, much like Zion, you can just look at Queen and tell he’s not close to NBA basketball shape. I hope the Pels can pull a miracle and have a good team next year but we have no draft assets and besides Bey and Trey we have no real trade assets. I’ll be shocked if they unload Zion.

He has hit the rookie wall physically, not in NBA shape, I believe once in NBA shape he will be and asset.

If we give up any asset to trade Poole, we better be getting an all star caliber player back.
Outside of that, no, there should not be a single asset wasted to dump him. Cutting him is better than trading him and using an asset to do so. He has 1 year left. We ain’t winning shite next year.

Before giving up a future 1st...I'd definitely figure out what a "buy out" would cost for his final season. Poole probably thinks he can still play in the NBA...and maybe there's another team out there... as dumb as the Pelicans ...who would take a chance with him....at a supposedly "bargain" price.

I wouldn’t buy him out unless he took a big cut in pay for it. And I’m definitely not throwing away firsts to get rid of him, that’s retarded. This team is going no where fast. Just see if you can get someone off another team that wants to unload a more useful player at the deadline with a bad contract. If not, just let him expire.

Queen is not athletic enough to ever be a positive NBA player. His ceiling is the basement. For those of us who lament Zion Williamson's defense, buckle up; Queen will strike a new defensive low. He will constantly be a target for pick and rolls and make memories of Jonas Valanciunas seem Rudy Gobert-like. Offensively, his 'flashes' do not negate his poor handles and he needs to have the ball in his hands to be somewhat effective (sound familiar?). Also, for a big man. he has an uncanny knack of finishing below the rim (can he jump?). Seems like he wants to be good, but athletically he's severely limited.
Overall, Weaver has struck out massively on both 'Popgun' Poole, and an unathletic Queen, neither of which are capable of playing a lick of defense in thIs league (perhaps any league).

Instead, New Orleans can only look longingly into the draft, wondering what could have been - left only with the consolation prize of Derik Queen (not to mention, having also given up Asa Newell in the process).
Article doesn’t even deep dive that we could have landed the #5 pick instead of Newell….

Does getting off of his salary even free up any amount of useful cap space? I'd assume that it would just give us enough breathing room to use a full MLE without getting up to the tax. Teams are going to view the Pels picks as pretty valuable, so you would want some decent (but overpriced) talent coming back if you're attaching first round pick(s).

Big Men who Couldn't:
Kwame Brown (First Overall Pick)
Anthony Bennett (First Overall Pick)
Hasheem Thabeet (Second Overall Pick)
Adam Morrison (Third Overall Pick)
Robert "Tractor" Trayler (Sixth Overall Pick)
Darko Milicic (Second Overall Pick)
Michael Olowokandi (First Overall Pick)
Bryant "Big Country" Reeves (Sixth Overall Pick)
Now tell me, what makes an unathletic Derik Queen better than any of these flops?
Heck, I will argue that Glen 'Big Baby' Davis (selected in second round) will end up as a better NBA Player.
Two First Round Draft Picks? Pu-lease!!!

No way. A team rebuilding doesn't need to be missing it's first round pick two out of the next five years.

I fully trust either Darvin Ham or Kevin Ollie to unlock the best in each and every player.

His ball handling, vision and passing ability are better than all of those listed. His rebounding is decent and he at least has a soft touch with his shot.

I love the irrational takes of this board. DQ will never be this or that..
DQ just turned 21 in March.
Also AD points out every game that Defense is the hardest thing for rookie big men to learn and takes a couple years. Missi is a lot better that he was last season.

Sounds like you just described 'Larry Legend'. I assure you that DQ isn't close to that. In fact, his handle sucks. Did you know that in college (Maryland), he had a negative assist to turnover percentage? Don't take my word for it; look it up.
I invite you to read today's Pelican Debrief. Here is an excerpt from Chris Lambert's article:
"Queen was never projected to be a good defender by any means. Still, his overall defensive incompetence has made him borderline unplayable, reigniting questions about the decision to mortgage the team's future to acquire him."
Gee, I wonder where we've heard that before?
Remember, when many professed that the team's problems were JV and BI's fault? I'd take those problems all day over the problems the team has now.
In fact, I'd happily give this team to Seattle or Las Vegas, if I could be assured of the clean slate of an expansion team.

Agreed. Way to early to write him off. Big men usually take longer develop.
I’d say about 90% of the board said Dyson would never be good enough to be in a rotation on a playoff team. Hes about to start in the playoffs….

Certainly not me; don't include me in that 90%.
...A winning player ALWAYS plays defense.
...A winning team ALWAYS plays defense.
...The Pelicans have players who play HORRIBLE defense.
...Teams that play HORRIBLE defense see HORRIBLE results.
...The Pelicans?
It really isn't rocket science, is it?
