Regarding demo shift and cities rebounding, what’s up with Newark and Jersey City?

Heard someone mention the diversity of Jersey City, and I went down a little rabbit hole because this lame shite fascinates me. I’ve seen some cities rebound firsthand during visits to places like Detroit and Pittsburgh. I had no idea the changes that have taken place in NJ. I knew Jersey City and Newark were ghetto shitholes for a long time, but apparently they have made a bit of a comeback?

JC has had an influx of Latinos and Asians, which I assume are Indian? And Newark has similar numbers. Murder rates are decreasing as both cities are much safer, at least on paper.

I haven’t been up that way in years, but I was surprised to read what I did.

Idk but I’d imagine Newark property values about to explode with $$$ probably moving out of NYC. Easy enough commute to financial district. New NYC mayor gonna be the best thing to ever happen to Newark. lol

Probably not a high bar to be the best thing to ever happen to Newark.

Got drunk with a bunch of JC cops once. They were all still wearing their gun belts and said the n-word more than anyone I've ever met (including me). It was a wild night... that's all I got.

Prudential has spent a ton of money to redevelop Newark. They will eventually make bank off of the investments downtown.

Tony Soprano got whacked, so the glorified crew in Jersey is gone

Newark is still one of the shittiest cities I’ve been too. It has a long way to go. Jersey City is actually pretty damn nice now, especially around the waterfront.

Detroit rebounded around 2012 because it had hit absolute bottom and had nowhere to go but up. When I would visit around 2000 the hotel desk guy wouldn't let me walk to dinner a few blocks in the heart of downtown and called me a cab.

I've lived in a few big cities that were on the way up until the culmination of covid, hyper-progressive inept mayors, and work from home put a hard damper on that. I moved out of Latoya the Destroya's NO and never looked back.

It’s been years since I’ve been to Newark, but there were large swathes of the city virtually abandoned and falling down.

Sometimes the only way to revitalize an area is for it to completely collapse. It has to get so bad that the people causing the collapse don’t even want to live there.

The sports district in Detroit is pretty legit now.

Some solid bars/nightlife and never felt unsafe.

You go wandering away from that corridor and all bets are off, but I was impressed.

The big money players like Goldman Sachs etc bought and built offices in Jersey City. Then everybody comes along for the cottage industry add ons.

I hope they do better with this than they did in the catfish farming industry. They had a processing plant and some farms and would loan farmers money that sold fish to their plant. They got their arse greased pretty good.

Haven't been to Newark in some time. It did have a small, updated downtown about 15 years ago. I think the Devils still play in that area. And some good ethnic food.

Jersey City is a different place. It's got a wide variety of neighborhoods.

The Hudson River waterfront - Newport and Paulus Hook - are very nice. Mix of older single family homes (brownstones, walkups), condos, and apartments. Along with some class A high rise office space, hotels, retail, etc. This place was redeveloped about 30 years ago (was horrible until the late 80's). Has at least 3 Path stations to take you quickly into Manhattan, and a light rail system that runs from Hoboken down to Bayonne. Goldman Sachs is still headquartered in the high rise along the south end - by the Colgate Clock. And a decent boat harbor is in that area.

The Heights - near Journal Square - has gotten better in the last 10 years. Older apartments & high rises were updated and converted to expensive housing. Path station at Journal Square gives this place easy access to the waterfront and Manhattan.

The rest of Jersey City - especially south of the Heights toward Bayonne - used to be quite sketchy. The Iman who planned the '93 WTC car bombing lived and operated in on of these neighborhoods.

Haven't been since 2019 so I'm not sure what it looks like now, but I suspect that not much has changed.

The Warden (no pics) has a sister and BIL in Elizabeth, NJ.
Total dump of a town, which is a shame. Every Latin American country is represented. Trash in the streets, etc.
They do have a large yard and make $400/mo per car for parking for people that work nearby or in The City.
You can literally jump on a train and be in Manhattan in 25 minutes or so.

JC at the waterfront has been nice for a long time.

I’m amazed that Newark is having any kind of comeback. That place was awful.
