Ol' boy didn't hold back.

quote:

In an interview with Jason Whitlock, Gottlieb decided to call out Bilas for what he perceived to be a hypocritical stance on the state of college basketball. The Green Bay coach believes Bilas is too negative about the state of college basketball and has benefitted personally from a system that he is advocating to destroy.

“He’s grown critical of the college game and it does feel like, Jay, if you don’t love this thing, why are you doing this? I think he’s been better this year, but I do think that he’s a brilliant guy but he’s just taken sort of a negative tone about our sport,” Gottlieb said.

“He doesn’t like the system that he helped create. He’s all been about player movement. He’s always been pro player, pro movement, pro free will. Basically he wants college basketball anarchy. He believes schools should be allowed to do whatever they want to do and that the NCAA’s bad and the system is bad.”

quote:

“The system that he says is rigged against players has made him a multi, multi, multi-millionaire ten times over. He actually is the beneficiary of what I believe true NIL is, which you go to a great school, you have a great career. He had a really good career for his ability. A great career. He played for a great coach and you forever benefit because of the school in which you went to. Everybody who works at ESPN has some sort of attachment with Duke. Jay does. Jay Williams does. Duke Vitale does,” Gottlieb remarked.

NIL money has ruined college basketball just as much as it has football.

With NIL, Gottlieb probably doesn't have to steal his teammate's wallet

Not making the players employees and having enforceable contracts with significant buyouts has ruined college sports more than NIL. It’s not the payments, it’s the freedom of movement that’s killed what we loved.

He's not wrong. This mess of college sports is exactly what Jay Bilas was advocating for.

College basketball was wrecked long before NIL/free portal movement came along. One and done torpedoed the game a while ago.

People think that because March Madness is as popular as it is (almost wholly driven by gambling), that the game itself is widely popular.

Basketball should adopt the baseball model

Gottlieb is on my short list of current coaches who I am tired of hearing from at every turn.

Mick Cronin, I am also looking at you.

If by baseball model you mean multiyear contracts then I agree with you. It's the only way to get things back under control a bit.

John (Notre Dame): Doug, I lost my credit card, where were you last night?

SportsNation Doug Gottlieb: (4:27 PM ET ) Ask your mom.

Johns Mom (Notre Dame): GOTTLIEB I KNOW YOU STOLE MY SON'S CREDIT CARD!

It’s kept star players from being stuck at places like UW-Milwaukee… now they can play more easily on the big stages their talents earned them

the way these media types went after the coaches during the FBI investigation despite the blue bloods getting away with it that they protected to where we are now is laughable

The talking heads like Bilas and Vitale lost all credibility attacking these coaches when everyone else was doing the same exact thing

I'm glad it's all out in the open now and the historical cheaters like Duke UNC and Kentucky don't have all those advantages now

He's not wrong about Bilas but I wish someone else would have said it. Bilas used to be great but is now negative and complains the entire broadcast.

Bilas praised Bama for their G league stunt and blamed the NCAA.

Bilas has always been a jackass. I remember way back in the day when Mick Cronin was still at Cinncy, there was an incident involving him and Ted Valentine. They got into an argument and “TV Teddy” stepped right into his space trying to intimidate him. It was so obvious that Valentine overstepped his bounds, that he even publicly apologized after the game. However, Bilas went on TV the next morning and criticized Cronin, basically placing all the blame on him for escalating the situation.
