For context, I work and am aware of some of the new ai tools. Combined with block laying off 40% of tech jobs which is more the modern way of moving to upper middle class, I am wondering how important colleges will be in the future.

I was talking to my coworker about this: if we were going to college tomorrow, what would we major in?

I'm not a parent of a late teen, but a grandparent of elementary school kids.

I asked the 10-year old the other day, "What are you thinking about doing when you grow up?" A: "I'm thinking about becoming a welder."

I am pushing medical field and engineering pretty hard. Will take awhile for ai to take many jobs in the heavy regulated med field plus population still getting older. I also think engineering will still provide solid returns.

Healthcare field but not MD

CRNA and subspecialty PAs can make bank with less schooling and liability.

Not a parent, but I think the two areas that would have the most stability would be medical jobs and construction/civil engineering.

Depends on the career, some college is an absolute necessity.

Many jobs do not require secondary education, but they also pay accordingly. Not a ton of only HS Diploma/GED and high pay jobs unless you start/own your own business/Sales

Even most trades require secondary education.

Welding. My welders are making $200k after overtime. I’m just pushing paper in the front office while they stack cash and talk child support.

Kids nowadays are being pushed towards the trades. Welding, HVAC, plumbing, etc and healthcare.

There's gonna be a glut of those people soon and they won't be making nearly as much as the ones today. In ten years welders will be a dime a dozen. (i didn't say good welders)

Human experience and communications. Although, nothing is immune.

All you STEM only types will be near 1st to fall. The AI super computer is the great equalizer.

No 0s or 1s will substitute for human awareness and experience. Stay near those. (Communications, Psychology (for all the unemployed), Event Mgmt, etc).

Grandparent here.I’m a retired R.N.,wife is a N.P working part time.
17 year old grandson expressing interest in nursing.I’m talking up becoming
echocardiogram technician.Much better job,IMO.Decent pay, don’t work nights, weekends or holidays( would be on rotating call).Don’t have to deal with bedpans, diarrhea and all the other unpleasntries nurses have to deal with.
Very interesting job,I always liked to watch them doing scans when I was able.
I can very well see AI doing interpretation of the scans rather than a cardiologist but I think it will always require a human to actually do the echo.
PA would also be a good field.

You are not a good parent if you "push" your kids to any occupation because it fits your interest and what you want in a career. Its fine to have a discussion to provide guidance, but they should always make their own career choices.
