A decade-old study claiming to find evidence of the earthquake described in the Bible at the time of Jesus' crucifixion is reigniting debate after resurfacing online.

The Gospel of Matthew says 'the earth shook' moments after Jesus cried out before dying on the cross, and researchers in 2012 reported evidence that could support the verse.

A team of geologists examined sediment layers near the Dead Sea, about 25 miles from where many scholars believe the crucifixion took place. Their analysis revealed signs of at least two significant earthquakes affecting the region.

Disturbances in the sediment pointed to a major quake around 31 BC and a smaller seismic event sometime between 26 and 36 AD.

Researchers noted that this period aligns with the years Pontius Pilate served as procurator of Judea, the timeframe in which the Gospel of Matthew describes an earthquake following Jesus' death.

Pontius Pilate, the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judaea, is identified in the Bible as the official who presided over Jesus' trial and ultimately sentenced him to death. Many scholars believe the crucifixion occurred around 33 AD.

I’d be more inclined to believe it if it came from a more reputable source like BBC

So researchers found "signs" of two earthquakes in an approximately 10 year period somewhere in the general region they believe Jesus may have been crucified?

That'd be Mark.

Mathew is probably the most error laden. But pretty cool about the earthquake.

I wonder if he would self-depreciatingly agree.

Wait until they announce that evolution couldn't have happened during the time frame allotted for Earth to form. They sorta already know this, thats why "punctuated equilibrium" is comically a thing.

And sadly they wont be around to readjust their belief system. He knew that too

I’d be more worried that a dude named Matt was chosen to be one of the 12

I know it’s the English version of the Jewish name. Sad that I have to say that before some sanctimonious prick arrives to ruin an obvious joke.

Well, it wasn't Brady or he would have had a picture of it.

Did it really take Geologists a decade to study sediment layers near Dead Sea?

Hope those Geologists never work at oil company. Reserves Replacement Ratio < 1 with those cats.

Cheer up… You’re a lot worse than you think you are, and God’s grace is a lot bigger than you think it is.

I think I read somewhere that Matthew was the oldest of all of the disciples and at the time that he decided to stop tax collecting and follow Jesus he was 21 years old. That’s pretty interesting.
