Savants fascinate me although haven’t spent much time researching individual cases.

If I understand correctly, many are born with these unique talents and often have other developmental issues such as extreme autism. Others suddenly develop unusual talents after being impacted by severe brain trauma.

Think I heard a story of a toddler who was only ever around his Spanish speaking parents but able to speak 8 languages.

I realize the brain in still a mystery in many ways but how do we explain the more significant cases of Savants?

Acquired Savant Syndrome is fascinating to me. People like the guy who had a brain injury and became a math genius after he recovered are amazing.

Hell, there are cases of people who could fluently speak languages they had never been around after a brain injury.

We know virtually nothing about the human brain.

My nephew is 8, wins math competitions in a major urban area at age levels higher than his, and had the head of that school district call his parents in for a meeting that basically was “we’ve never seen this before and don’t know what to do”.

But the only thing this little nigha eats is chicken nuggets. It’s the wildest thing.

I've seen examples of this on TV several times and it's amazing how talented some of the people are but are totally outside the social realm and can't relate to people other than caregivers.

One guy was blind and could use clay to mold statues just by feel and make exact replicas.

Another could listen to a musical score and play it back on his piano flawlessly.

The man used as the character Raymond in "Rain Man" was Kim Peek who could memorize books, had astounding math skills and could give you the day of the week for any date mentioned.

Amazing, and sad at the same time since those folks could never function on their own, no matter how great the skills they are gifted with.

And vice versa, speaking of the aforementioned bazillion-poster.

This is the story that sent me down the Aquired Savant Syndrome rabbit hole several years ago.

these are largely exaggerated instances, mixed up with foreign accent syndrome, or just down right BS. The rare instances were they are actually speaking a foreign language and not gibberish, its from previous exposure and teaching, usually from childhood that becomes easier to access in the light of the brain alterations.
