I was under the impression this guy was dead in the woods somewhere, but I guess he's still collecting his checks.

WISE COUNTY, Va. — Nearly three months since Union High School football coach Travis Turner went missing, News 5 has confirmed he is still receiving a paycheck. That's despite warrants for his arrest on five counts of possession of child porn and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.

The first list showed payments to Turner of $5,767.27 each for November, December and January, all after his November 20 disappearance. The second list showed additional payments of $1,308.18 each for Turner's coaching supplement in November, December and January.
That's a total of $21,226.35 paid to Turner by Wise County Schools, after he went missing when Virginia State Police said they were en route to his home to question him.
At the time, the school system confirmed an employee had been placed on administrative leave with pay but would not say who. Turner was charged the following week and removed from the school's staff page shortly after.

Wise County schools superintendent Mike Goforth did not respond by deadline to our request for comment by phone and email. He also did not answer our question of why Turner is still receiving pay.

Are there any withdrawals from his account?

Could be a joint account and wife is spending the money
This might be a way for school district to be helping the family
Probably not allowed under law but intentions may be noble
I doubt he’s spending the money… unless wife is in of it and funding him

Financial controls!
Makes one wonder how many others are unofficially receiving pay & benefits.

impressive someone can go missing for this long. Guess he has been planning this.

They cant.
The teachers union wont let it happen.
Innocent until proven guilty and until then you and I continue to pay.
He may be dead or just running.

Reminds me a little bit of that guy in Idaho who killed his kids and fled into the woods. I think it took them like 3 months to find him (well, his body).

He’s probably on a 12 month salary plan and they have to pay out per Union Contract until he is officially terminated. Which, per the same contract, is probably hard to do with him “missing.”
A real journalist would have gotten a comment / explanation from the School Board. But that wouldn’t be as dramatic as this.

Maybe this is the more rural western Virginia. But the article made it sound like the cops were literally en route to his house when he took off.

It’s VA, so they’ll probably give him a bonus for being a pedo

This is what doesn’t make sense. How long until the school system can terminate for him not showing up for work?

This dude is dead and just hid himself well before doing the deed, right?

The School Board declined the interview request.

That's my take on this. For him to just vanish with no trace and reported to have done so armed. Add to that he did this in the coldest time of the year in Virginia and I doubt he's still alive. If he didn't off himself, the elements got him.

Its just tax dollars. Grows on trees.

He should be fired for not showing up. They call it "teacher timeout" and any teacher accused of something has to sit in detention essentially pending investigation while they wait to be cleared or terminated. You can't just no show. At least that's how I've heard it's handled elsewhere.
