Sushi lovers — at what point did you become a sushi snob?

For me, it was eating at Nobu in Aspen in 2012.

I had his yellowtail jalapeño “appetizer” and some Japanese sea scallops in a crudo broth…. and from that moment on I realized that sashimi and other small portion dishes is where it’s at.

Looking back I’m ashamed of myself that I ever ordered a shaggy dog roll, Philadelphia roll, California roll, etc… literally had a moment like what the frick was I thinking?

The day I was finally comfortable enough to tell my sushi chef what I liked and to go nuts. I sat there for 3 hours eating things that (at that time) I felt far too exotic or weird to order and loving all of it.

Couldn't go back to a spicy tuna roll after that.

I love sashimi and other small plates that emphasize high-quality raw fish like toro, uni, or salmon belly, but I will still not tolerate Philly roll slander.

I love sashimi and chef-created dishes and have eaten at some very high end sushi places around the country, but this...

is just a tad dramatic. I can enjoy fun rolls with no issue and it's not that serious.

Never

I love Nobu and nearly anything on a high-end sushi place's menu. I'll try anything and almost always love it.

But I'll still crush a deep fried roll with some fake crab mix in it and a good sauce on top.

I'm guessing you were thinking you wanted to enjoy something that tasted good. What else matters? I've had sushi in Japan several times for client dinners and most people here wouldn't eat 50% of what was served. Traditional sushi includes some hardcore stuff with incredibly strong fish flavors that are too much for the American palate (or at least this American's).

Eat what you like and enjoy and forget about 'purity'.

Not really a snob, just don't like the idea of getting ptomaine poisioning. Probably will turn my nose up to "gas-station" sushi...

Sounds like what you are enjoying isn't even sushi.

I've basically gotten to the point that I could eat nothing but salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and eel nigiri and be extremely satisfied.

I treat food like I treat alcohol. Do I prefer high end fare or whiskey? Absolutely, but I’m not above drinking a Miller Lite or a Spicy Tuna roll.

I will say that if a restaurant offers a Crudo, 9/10 I will order it.

I'll gladly take a Philly, California, or any of the signature/chef's rolls at a sushi place, but won't get it at a Chinese restaurant or at a grocery store where you can swap propane tanks, if that counts as snobby.

I'm not above grocery store 'sushi' but fully aware it's a sad representation of the good stuff though at a fraction of the cost.

Tons of sushi places in Austin now that do omakase with small seatings of 12 or so at a time around counters where you can interact with the chefs. Fantastic quality but sky high prices.

I'm ok somewhere in the middle of those. But, I do draw the line at cream cheese. Count me out.

Yakuza house is bloody epic. I remember my first few visits.

I have people from far away ask me about the best sushi in NOLA. i tell thim it's a small storefront on Vets in Metairie. The don't believe me and I dont think any have taken me up on it.

Too bad...

We moved away, I miss this place a lot.

yeah I can’t do cream cheese or fake crab. But I very much enjoy a well made roll and that’s what I usually get along with a few pieces of sashimi. Snobbery has no palate only judgement

They moved to a bigger footprint - the old VooDoo across from Whole Foods on Severn.
