We rescued this dog in 2020. He was extremely malnourished and sick. He is now 100% healthy and loves life. He is protective of his family. Last week he attacked someone who walked up on our front porch where he is leashed up. It was someone working at the house and my wife (no pics) was right behind him. This has happened 2 times in the last few years both times my wife being right next to him. He has also gone after dogs that come into our yard.

We have 2 young kids and are now nervous he may turn on the one day if he gets triggered somehow. He’s never showed any type of aggression to anybody in our family or that we know personally. We’ve heard stories of family dogs attacking the kids though…

Pretty much looking for other peoples advice on what they’d do in this situation. Definitely don’t want to put him down since he’s following instincts and is in great health. But also no one will want to adopt an aggressively protective dog. He’d make a great hog dog but I don’t know where to even start looking for that or if he’s too old to train.

Dogs who attack people need to be put down.

In be4 "its not the dogs fault" and "dogs are better than people" and all that other bullshite.

Have it put down and get another one. Its a major liability and could seriously injure or kill someone's child.

When a dog attacks a person, that dog has to go. No questions asked.

I have a dalmatian that is aggressive at front door people, worries me. my sons friends just walk in a shoe her out of the way no problem, but If I get up she is aggressive. Waiting on something bad to happen and she will be put down

Like protecting the master. which is weird cause there are kids here always front door is always open never a sign of anyone being mean here. Calm environment

This is not the advice you are looking for…but I am not at all tolerant of vicious dogs that are aggressive against people or other animals. They will invariably injure someone you love or cost you a hell of a lot of money and neither is acceptable to me.

The first time he exhibited this behavior, I would have shot him in the head.

An admirable effort, but sadly a risk since one doesn’t know the history of the dog.

You left out the breed of the dog. On purpose, I assume

I'm not feeding any animal that growls or shows threatening behavior toward friends of family.

Or what if you go find your balls wherever they may be, and once your testosterone level is above zero, put the dog in its place whenever it acts aggressive towards people?

Until the day he snaps. Then it might be too late for you. Aside from the obvious safety risk, I hope you're happy letting a 4 legged lawsuit live among you & your family.

Glad and somewhat surprised to see this is the prevailing view so far.

You set your dog up for failure.

I'd never blame my dog for protecting his home from strangers. When strangers (contractors, bug man) do need to come over I secure him.

If the dog has never been aggressive with family, then youre likely good. But I agree, you need to make sure the dog has minimal interactions with non family members

Many breeds of dogs have strong protective instincts. I would think at instinct would be even stronger with a dog that was abused and taken in by a loving home. I had two Dobermans that were never a problem with guests in our home or with our toddlers. But if you tried to take pics of those toddlers with a flash back then, the Dobermans would stand right in front of them and growl until you stopped. Dogs are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.

You could try to find it a new home, maybe someone who lives in the country where its less likely to run into strangers

To clarify:
quote:

my wife (no pics) was right behind him.

and
quote:

both times my wife being right next to him

As in he was protecting his pack or thankfully my wife (no pics) was there?
