DOTD Announces Permanent Closure of Washington Street exit on I-10 – East Baton Rouge Parish

Friday, February 13, 2026 at 9:18:01 AM

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces the permanent closure of the Washington Street exit on Interstate 10 in East Baton Rouge Parish. Work will begin on Wednesday, February 18, with nightly closures in place through Sunday, February 22.

The closure is intended to eliminate dangerous weaving movements and reduce bottlenecks that have contributed to crashes and delays, particularly from the high volume of vehicles merging from the Mississippi River Bridge. Removing the exit will improve safety and traffic flow along this corridor.

Work will include installing concrete barriers, removing signage and restriping the area. The ramp will be fully removed as part of the ongoing I-10 widening project.

DOTD received approval from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and ensured compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act prior to proceeding with the closure.

Motorists seeking access to downtown Baton Rouge are advised to use the I-110 South exit to Terrace Avenue or the I-10 West exit to Nicholson Drive/Highland Road exit.

Makes sense. I-110 South has their own exit now. I-10 East can exit Nicholson / Highland.

I'm curious if it's actually a permanent closure as we know the exit today and they are moving forward with the next stage of construction.

Or, are they removing the "new" Washington Street exit from the plans. If its the former this announcement is a "nothing burger."

I110 to City Lakes Drawings

On another note WTF is taking so long to open up on/off ramps at Pecue. They are now pushing it back to March.

Yes, it will prevent the idiots traveling southbound on I110 from cutting across two lanes of I10 Westbound traffic that is trying to merge with I110 after crossing the bridge.

Will eliminate several wrecks and prevent unnecessary frequent braking that slows merging process.

It won't be immediately noticeable because its part of a larger construction project.

Locals with more than 2 brain cells have been suggesting this for 40+ years. But because nothing but democrats live off that exit it was forbidden to even think of doing.

I feel like there will be static about this unless they've bought several people off. If there's enough local preachers who got checks you may be safe.

Long overdue, if you’ve ever gotten stuck in traffic there you have seen how little that exit is used

They have other options, it’s not like that area is now cut off

Holy mother of God!

I’m gonna drag my arse back to BTR one day from Oregon into Metro and definitely bask in the glory of Washington Street exit NOT existing.

I’m ready to run through a wall.

Dang. This will eliminate or reeuce the cheat code to ride in the right lane as long as possible and catch an 18 wheeler slowly merging to get over.

Pretty racist that Washington St. now only has one exit instead of two.
