Good Scotch

Looking for a decent scotch that will not break the bank. I had one of my IT guys do an hour or two of work for me at my house, and he wouldn't take any cash. He is into scotch, and I would like to get him a bottle that I can find at my local Rouses pretty easily. I know nothing about scotch; I am more of a bourbon drinker. Any help is appreciated.

what type of scotch does he like to drink?

Scotch is widely variable in its taste profiles. Without knowing his preference for peated and non-peated whisky, I'd stick to something non-peated. If he doesn't like peat, then he won't drink a peated bottle, but almost all scotch drinkers will at least drink the non-peated versions, even if its not their preference. A couple easily found, but not basic and overly commercialized bottles, would be Oban 14 and Aberlour 12. They will be under $100, but some of the longer aged bottles could get more expensive.

Guys, I have no idea what type of scotch he likes. I really appreciate the replies so far.

Get him this and call it a day. If he likes a peaty scotch, he will love this. If he doesn't, he can serve it to guests or just put it on the shelf for display.
For that matter, a bottle of Aberlour is always a safe bet.

What's your price point?
Glenalachie 13, Arran 10, and Ledaig 10 are three of the absolute best scotches you will find in the $50-$70 range. They are superior to the big brands, and you get way more for your money. Scotch guys know these bottles, and if he doesn't he is guaranteed to appreciate you opening him up to a world of better whiskey

On a scale from low to high smokiness (peat).
1. Glenmorangie 12
2. Macallan 12
3. Aberlour Abunadh
4. Highland Park 12
5. Lagavulin 16
6 Ardbeg Ueagadal
Macallan 12 or Lagavulin 16 both around $100 and would be what I would buy someone without knowing what they like.

Go for one of the Macallan or even a pricier Glen Livet. Scotch guys usually aren’t snobby.

Then get one of the 3 I gave you. That Arran 10 is probably the best scotch available in that price point, and the Ledaig is more on the smoky end. Since you don't know what he likes, I'd play it safe and stick with the Arran or Craig

If he likes peaty scotch, I would go with:
Bunnahabhain 12
Laphroaig 10
Lagavulin 16
If not, or if I was unsure, I would go with:
Balvenie Double Wood
Glenmorangie
Macallans 12

This. Great balance of peat and sherry oak. My go to for the last 5-6 years.

If this guy doesn't take money, a better drinking Scotch might be more appreciated than price point.
Bruichladdich Classic Laddie Scotch
It's pronounced Brook-laddie and it's a fine end of the day drink.
It's a bright blue bottle. Easy to find.

I hate peat, but I find the Highland Park very drinkable, picked up the 15 and the 18 when the local store had them on clearance.
4. Highland Park 12
