MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A congressional resolution introduced by Alabama Representatives Barry Moore and Shomari Figures seeks to federally recognize Mobile as the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States.
The bipartisan measure would affirm Mobile’s significance as the originator of the American carnival celebration, a distinction the city has claimed for more than three centuries.
“It would give the spotlight to our wonderful city, because Mobile is the mother of mystics. We are the birthplace of the modern day American carnival,” said Cart Blackwell, curator at the Mobile Carnival Museum.

Mobile residents have celebrated Mardi Gras for more than 300 years, marking the close of Carnival and the beginning of Lent. The tradition has been passed down through generations since 1703.
“It is a historical fact that in the 1830s Mobile established the first mystic society or Krewe in the country, and that is the Cowbellion de Rakin and then the Strikers. Now we have over 80 active societies. So we got the ball rolling,” Blackwell said.

Many historians already recognize Mobile as the original home of Mardi Gras in America. The resolution aims to ensure that history is officially acknowledged at the national level.
The measure still must be voted on and approved before it becomes official.

Mobile is so lame.
True story, I once broke up with my girlfriend that convinced me to give Mobile MG a try. I’m still pissed off to this day I missed Mardi Gras that year.

This is the most Mobile thing ever. I hope it passes and I hope they put out signage.

Mobile certainly seems insecure about this issue.

Kind of like gumbo.
While it tends to get debated, there's some thoughts that gumbo in North America originated in Alabama along the Gulf Coast. Whether that is true or not, what is true is that regardless, South Louisiana perfected it.

The first movie ( Roundhay Garden Scene) was made in Yorkshire, UK, but Hollywood is the standard.

Friend,
The birthplace of Mardi Gras is Europe.
The birthplace of Mardi Gras in North America is Bayou du Mardi Gras near present day Buras, Louisiana. It was there that Iberville and the crew of his two ships, sent on a mission to explore the Mississippi River, celebrated the first Mardi Gras in North America. The year was 1699.
Delusional Mobilians conveniently ignore this history.
