Can my dog tell time?

My dog, a beagle, sleeps on the floor next to my bed. Every morning, right around 5:30, give or take ten minutes, he jumps up to bed to wake me up. How the hell does he know?

I have a Black Lab, does the same thing at 5:30 every morning. Also, when the wife returns from work at about 4:30 in the afternoon he is waiting at the back door for her to return.

Dogs very much know their routine and you will know it as well. 
Our dogs know 8pm is snack time every night.

Mine goes and begs by the pantry door every night at 8pm for supper.
So I changed the clocks to military time and now he's all fu cked up.

Sally boops me near every morning usually around the same time, then hops up and baby spoons.
I don't get it because we don't get up that early. She’s lucky she's cute.

It's amazing how my dogs know it's 3:30 am. They wake me up every single day give or take 5 minutes. I thought it was them hearing the coffee maker, but I turned that off and still wake me up at the exact same time every day.

My previous lab knew exactly when 7pm was. If he hadn't been fed at 7:01, he would walk over to where I was sitting, sit down in front of me and stare me down. I swear he was staring in to my soul with his anger lol.

Of course

My beagle, Arnie, gets fed at 4 pm for his afternoon feeding. He starts hinting around 2:30 that it's time.

Dogs don't like Daylight Savings Time

Dogs tell passage of time by scents. For example you leave in the morning, 8 hours later your scent has reduced to a faint, almost undetectable smell and he senses you will be home soon and maybe sits at a front window (as mine does) anticipating your soon return.

Yes and no. I have 30+ years of hound rescues
My oldest female is a beagle mix and sitting at my feet at this moment.
She will start this ritual at about 5:30
She will start barking at me at around 7:00 to 7:30
She will get fed at 7:30
She will not stop barking after 7:30 and will pace until I feed her\
Can she tell time?
Probably not as she takes about 2 weeks to reset her "clock" when daylight savings hits every year.
I will say this, her brain / stomach is probably more accurate than the Atomic Clock.

Are there any clocks visible to the dog?
If yes, experiment and add 15 minutes to the clock.

They can tell time.
**Interesting tidbit. You know how your dog (maybe a cat, too) seems to know to go wait by the door for you when it’s time to come home from work? I read it’s bc of smell. Your scent is heavier in morning and once you leave, it’s dissipates during the day. So as it shrinks they’ve learned at what point your smell has lessened and you will be coming home.

This. They have done studies that if you have a way to refresh the scent, it will frick with their sense of time.

Most dogs have an amazing sense of time that comes with routine. They recognize patterns. My two dogs are on a schedule. If its a weekday that is off schedule they are out of sync. They are waiting for their food if its past the time they are normally fed, etc.
