Is the transfer portal exploiting the current generation of athletes?

I’ll be upfront and honest and say it’s difficult for me to invest much in these players today because they’re here for such a short amount of time and can be gone tomorrow if the notion strikes them or the NIL money is better elsewhere.
That being said, I see the portal as exploiting this generation of athletes for much of what ails society today in instant gratification or I quit, how much money can I make over commitment to the program because it’s where you want to be. The real downside for the player, although few if any of them realize it yet because they’re young and inexperienced in life at this point, is how adversity and working hard to be better makes you achieve what you were not capable of previously, and how overcoming adversity instills confidence and character in you that will affect the rest of your life as an adult.
Today they’re Tigers, but tomorrow they can quickly become Aggies, or Volunteers, or Gators, etc, and whilst this may benefit them or not, it certainly does not motivate me investing much interest in them as a Tiger as I once did players in following their paths to being better players, and pulling for them as if they were fully invested themselves.
Whether it’s the NIL, the transfer portal, or playoffs and what it’s done to CFB in general, I don’t see how any of this is healthy for CFB long term, and unless we get a handle on this, the CFB you know in the future will not look anything like the CFB that was so unique and special in the past, and all we’ll rally be left with is regret for what it became. I’m already experiencing much of that TBH.

Exploit me all day long for $1 million+ to play a game I love.

They not only asked for this. They sued for it in court.

No. The athletes are exploiting the transfer portal

Are you weeping for your decrease in interest in college football?
Or are you concerned about the effects of the portal on college athletes?
Because your post looks like the former, and I don't think anyone should have real concerns about the latter.

Exploited isn’t the right word. Nobody besides agents are benefiting from the constant portal entries for more money. Is the current system a bad thing? Absolutely, but like another poster said, they fought for this.

I just don't see how you can think this.
We have a final 4 with Indiana-Oregon and Miami-Ole Miss.
Half of the teams playing have never won a title in the history of the sport. Ole Miss hasn't had claim to a title in 66 years. Miami hasn't won a title in 25.
The Indiana Hoosiers just destroyed Alabama in a meaningful game. Ole Miss just beat Kirby Smart led Georgia.
Do you want to go back to Bama, Clemson, OSU, UGA? Without NIL and the portal, that's what happens for the next 10-20 years. Do you want to go back to trying to raise a home grown QB? Hasn't happened successfully since Matt Flynn. We don't have great QB talent in this state. Sure we are going to lose some skill guys, but that's the rub. What's the point of getting all the guys from around Lake Pontchartrain to stick around if we can't throw to them without a portal QB?

"sure it may benefit them, but what about how its makes me feel" is peak entitlement

Elijah Haven and Peyton Houston may disagree.

Would have loved some of that exploitation coming out of school. Could have ditched the Hamburger Helper sooner.

I think they are assaulting the portal

Were the athletes being exploited all these years? It appears they were.

It’s ruined already. They damn sure didn’t have a plan to ease into this shite. It feels like they’re just making just washed their hands of the whole deal and are just making a money grab till it falls apart.

Well one thing is certain. Academics/ the focus of getting a Degree ,is dead. Ironically,.. less than 2% will make an active NFL roster ,.soooooo,.. I hope they make the short sided money last!

I could just as easily say that the athletes are exploiting the wealthy who are willing to dish out gobs of money just so their favorite team will be relevant.
The system is definitely broken, but I don't blame the athlete for playing the "money grab" game.

It's pretty much destroyed the future carreer value (at least from the having played football perspective) of the marginal player who stays with a team for four years.
There's a huge percentage of players who would never really have a shot at the NFL, who were historically able to parlay their playing days at home state schools into increasing their value and prospects at any number of future endeavors.
How much of that is just going poof under this current framework?

I completely get what you are saying but maybe I can offer a little positivity, my son was a PWO true freshman this past season and he worked his tail off, stayed humble and quiet, just listening and learning in meeting rooms. Coach Wolford called him last Wednesday and offered him a scholarship. He is a little undersized at 295 currently and will get to 310-315 before next fall but he believes he will get on field in some capacity next season. On a great path. Coach Baker, Coach People’s annd outgoing coaches spoke some nice things according to Wolford on his behalf as he earned respect of teammates and coaches alike going against D being on scout team. He has a very aggressive, play to whistle mean streak we all want our guys to have. He has outstanding character, humility, and has grown up loving LSU. I believe he will be a leader for this team at some point. Have faith, the bad attitudes, entitlement, show up late and me-first players are being weeded out. It is hard to follow the pay to play arena we are in now, I truly get it. He is a player you can get behind and be proud to follow. Of course I am biased, lol. Geaux Tigers!!!
