For the second year in a row, Louisiana ranks at the very top of states losing population. Louisiana took the top spot for outbound migration in 2024 and it appears there’s now slowing in sight? Is this a blip on the radar?

A worrisome long-term trend for the region? Allison Plyer is Chief Demographer of the Data Center in New Orleans and past Chair of the US Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee and says the chief culprit is economics. "The state has had really weak economic growth. Since the year 2000, Louisiana has only gained 2% more jobs while the nation has grown at a rate of 20% in the same time. That's a big reason people are leaving the state," she points out.

I was naive and should have left 30 years ago.

ETA: seriously. I stayed for the low cost of living and the sportsman’s paradise. It was a lie!

Checking in. Left in August 2012 and no plans to ever return to Louisiana as a resident.

Have house prices in Lafayette come down yet?

Props to the ones that have stayed in Louisiana. Risking getting shanked or car broken into for the crawdads and the tailgating.

I had a great opportunity to leave in 2016 and I'm still kicking myself for not doing it.

I know this is a running joke, but the working Louisiannian deserves better. I knew alot of great people there, but the state is so badly managed that we left at the first opportunity.

Shocked it's only 2 in a row.

that means more people are choosing to stay in Mississippi than La.

Now that I think about it I know 3 people that have moved from LA to the Hattiesburg area and love it

Left 2 years ago and it has been a great decision. Love Louisiana with all my heart, but man it is fricked up. Unless things drastically change, I will not be moving back. The people deserve better.

I wish some of those boudin baws would migrate to central FL and setup shop here so I wouldn't have to pay $100 in shipping everytime need to get my fix.

Louisiana is garbage. The demographics are certainly not what you want to have a family around

I feel like I'm wading chest deep in water realizing that I missed the last boat out of this economic hell hole years ago and no one else is going to offer me a life raft out. I'm stuck going down with the ship.

Yeah...Best Stop over the past two years has opened locations in Katy and Baytown. The way Karchner's has been opening locations ever since DM bought a franchise/partnership thing with the OG St. Landry owners, I wonder if he doesn't at least have somewhere in Beaumont or a Houston burb in his future plans.
