What is the disconnect between LSU NFL talent and mediocrity last 5 seasons?

I saw LSU has 12 first round picks since 2020. Half or 1/3 of those may even make the HOF. Practically all of them were hits and not busts.

4 of top 7 NFL WR yards last year were LSU
2 of top 4 in NFL QBR last year were LSU
2 of top 6 in INTs were LSU between Donte Jackson and DSjr in 2024
Again in 2025, 2 of top 7 in NFL INTs are LSU
1 of top 3 in NFL sacks are LSU, 1 of top 5 in 2024 sacks was LSU.
LSU led NFL top 100 list with 9 players this year.

Ole Miss only has 2 first rounders since 2020. And Walter Nolan has been a non factor. Dart has struggled somewhat, but that may be because NYG suck.

Yet, Ole Miss is 57-19 in this time frame, and LSU likely a good amount lower.

Be specific in what the disconnect is. Don’t say just “coaching”. That’s obvious. But what within coaching? No heart, drive? What specifically is the reason besides saying just ‘coaching’?

You’re asking us to tell you what makes a good or bad coach? I have a feeling that if you are asking this question, you aren’t going understand when someone gives you a detailed answer.

Ole Miss is starting dudes from Grambling, Washington State and ULM. Meanwhile we have a bunch of prima Donna transfers from P4 teams who can’t do shite.

It amazes me that fans pretend we didn’t watch Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. You had to know failure was a very real possibility.

2020 includes the 5 from the 2019 team and then Chase who didn’t play in 2020 was drafted the next year.

Then Stingley who has 2 injury plagued years in 2022.

So 7/12 were on that 2019 and we got a pretty good result there.

then you had 3 on the offense in 2023 which was the best offens in the county we just had an absolute dog shite defense.

Yeah the handwriting was on the wall watching him go 44-6, make the playoffs in 2018 and 2020 and have Notre Dame #5 in 2021

It’s always a real possibility

2 of the 4 WR’s, 1 of the 2 QBs, 1 of the 2 DB’s and 4 of the 9 on the Top 100 won a national championship. Now do all players on these lists and notice how many won titles. It proves nothing.

We have been very average since 2019. It is a team game. The fact we had a few outstanding players in that stretch with nothing to show for it proves that.

It depends on the year.

2020 - COVID and Stingley and Chase opted out of the season
2021 - Ed O had his mid-life crisis and RC turned the locker room against him, so it all went to hell quickly
2022 - Kelly is hired and misses on Freeman as DC and lands on Matt House (LSU wins the SEC West)
2023 - The offense was #1 in the country and the defense was almost dead last and historically bad
2024 - Defense better, but not great, Offense trying to replace 3 first rounders
2025 - Defense back to what LSU usually has and the offense is historically bad due to injuries and bad OL play

Coaching= (in order) 1)establish culture, 2)develop players 3)pregame strategy 4)in game adjustments.

We over relied on portal and didnt develop players. Metric is simple: after x amount of time are you bigger stronger faster quicker smarter more skilled.

A close second was lack of elite pregame strategy. Bc we didnt develop players, we truly didn't know what we had and we didnt know what we were going against. Jayden Daniel's Heisman year he was so good we were less than 10 third down stops over 3 loses from being undefeated. Other than that, utter coaching failures

6 of those did not play after the 2019 season which was pretty successful. Another, Stingley only played in 10 games after 2019 over 2 seasons. 3 more were part of the incredible 2023 offense, the team was not as successful because the defense was atrocious. 2 other first round picks over 5 years isn’t a lot.

You need to look at the micro level, individual seasons vs macro picks spread out over multiple years.

Good summary

quote:

2020 - COVID and Stingley and Chase opted out of the season

Will add:
- Lost Aranda and Brady from the staff. Shelvin and Vincent both sat out. Brennan got hurt in G3. Terrace truncated his season. Ed insisted on superimposing his attacking 4-man front against the advice of Pelini. All the continuity and momentum from '19 was gone. Poof.

Back to the OP's question:
- I don't think the NFL success-LSU record relationship is as direct as the OP makes it seem. Almost all the players on the NFL list are clustered around the '19 team and the '23 offense.
- With Ed, he got too big for his britches and lazy to boot. He made several suspect hires (or Fat Scott made them for him).
- With low-flyin' Brian, he dismissed his best recruiters, was slow to adapt to this era, and . . . you tell me: he was lazy, disinterested, soft, and on. Sloan got a lot of grief on here. Maybe it was all warranted. But there were numerous examples of good play calls spoiled by sheer inept fundamentals. not X & O failures, but fundamental failures. And Kelly let that go on and on an on.

Maybe a bunch of our guys are only coming to LSU to get to the NFL and not to dominate and win while here.

Coaches like Kirby and Saban built cultures where that isn't acceptable. We recruit kids telling them we'll get them to the NFL. Maybe that's what you have to do. But it hasn't translated to on field success in 6 seasons. Ever since we've leaned into the NFLSU thing, it feels like we've lacked on field leadership and heart. Seems like we're disproportionately affected by opt outs every year for example.

Probably painting with a broad brush but it all comes down to culture and leadership in my opinion.
