Plenty of food memories here, too. One of my favorites is that we were driving as a family to NYC

We were taking a round about way and along the way the younger two got a stomach virus or car sick or something - but everyone felt bad bc it was bad

When we were in Johnson City, TN, MrGRT and I had a talk about turning back - but I said no, one more day, I found a washateria, washed everything and the next day we drove on - everyone was calm and somewhere in north Virginia the kids said they were hungry

That was the best Cracker Barrel we ever ate - and the waitress was so nice she brought us extra pancakes and bacon. Lord knows what she thought we put away like 2 dozen biscuits, too

I miss my mother cooking three huge meals a day while I worked on the farm. She was a fantastic cook.

I have a lot of great food memories so I will just list some that I always think back to.

I was kind of a small town boy with country parents who knew nothing about good restaurants. My senior year of high school this girl I was friends with invited me to the Christmas dinner with the law firm she was working for. We went to Lafittes Landing, which was Josh Folses place in Donaldsonville. That blew me away.

My grandmas fried chicken/porkchops with mashed potatoes topped with white gravy.

Crawfish boils at my grandparents place on the bayou when I was growing up.

Dining at the chefs table in the kitchen at Commanders Palace for my 40th birthday. 8 or so courses paired with wine and then at the end of the meal they brought out pretty much every dessert they had and set it on the table.

I believe Lafitte Landing burned down didn’t it?

That was his best restaurant I thought.

Seven steak cooked in a grease gravy over rice at my grandmother’s. She'd begin cooking it for lunch right after breakfast. Good times.

My mom passed when I was 15, so I spent a lot of time around her older sisters. Aunt Lee-Lee cooked the best red beans and smothered pork steaks imaginable. As soon as breakfast was done, she started cooking the next meal. She knew how to bbq and make hog cracklings. She gave me my first alcohol beverage, as well, lol.

Holiday time at my parents... Late 70's all of the 80 and early 90's... My mom went all out.. She was a great cook but picked up her game during this time period.. There was a buffet/sideboard in the dining room that was at least 8 feet long that was filled with dishes.. Seafood eggplant.. Mirliton seafood casserole.. Green pepper casserole (awesome).. Oyster dressing... Sweet potatoes.. different vegetables.. rolls Dirty rice.. Salad and a big arse Turkey.. and a few more that I can't remember at this moment.. This was done for Thanksgiving but Christmas and New Years had their own special menu.. Thanks Mama for making some great memories...

In the 1970s, walking into elementary school in the morning and smelling those “from scratch” yeast rolls baking in the cafeteria.

Heading almost every Sunday for years to my Aunt Judy's house for Sunday dinner. Her mother, my grandmother, lived with her and those two ladies could cook up a feast fit for kings and everything was so damn good.

Typical meal had 2 entrees, beef or pork roast with brown gravy with either mashed potatoes or rice and a red gravy with meatballs and pasta. Sometimes it would be gumbo, jambalaya, etouffee, etc.

There would also be a big salad, either homemade bread or French bread, a couple pies or cakes for dessert and usually a couple things to drink like iced tea, fresh lemonade or Zatarain's Root Beer extract to make a pitcher of Root Beer with a bit of fresh orange juice squeezed into it.

There would be about 10 people every Sunday sitting around the table.

My father and I would meet at the old Phil's location on Government St. once or twice a month. Raw oysters and a few cold beers. Sadly, I can no longer do that with him. We never ordered anything else. Just oysters and beer.

I'm gonna go with my favorite from 2025. I went to Washington DC for work and asked for references here. There were several great ones but the best was Filomena in Georgetown. The place was decorated for Halloween and it was incredible. The pasta was homemade and delicious.. but what really blew me away was the dessert. I had a Macadamia Nut White Chocolate Cheesecake that was probably the most delicious bite of dessert I've ever had. It was light and fluffy and not overly sweet.. just enough to make you want more.

I'll never forget the generosity of this board, sharing those incredible rec's with me. It was very special.
