12-1 in the OOC portion of rhe schedule. Admittedly, I have not watched them consistently thus far.
What does the Rant think about how we'll fare in the SEC? Is making the NCAA Tournament realistic?

The Warren Nolan RPI predictor has us going 6-12 in conference. I think that is the about the middle of an expected range at this point.

I would say 4-14 is the floor and 8-10 is the ceiling. Defense is very suspect. Offense has been good against really bad opposition. We can score against better teams if we have one player go off (see SMU). Don't think you will do that consistently.

We are a good shooing team from all over the floor, including free throws. I think my concern is how the defense will hold up, because we’ve seen some inconsistency with lesser opponents over the last few weeks.
We will learn a lot in the next couple of weeks, but I don’t think it’s crazy to assume this is a middle of the pack SEC team that could easily make the tournament as a 8-10 seed

I agree with most of your post, but I wouldn’t say we have a good 3-point shooting team.

It was a very easy OOC overall; but they did a decent job navigating it. Would have liked to see a little better fight put up against Texas Tech but most SEC teams got blown out at some point in their OOC. The onyl impressive win we have so far is SMU as they are barely Top 40 in kenpom right now, everyone else we beat is outside the Top 100. The SEC is without a doubt much weaker than it was last year, but despite that seems to still be the #1 rated conference overall this year so that helps our chances overall (to win more games and it still "look" impressive).
9-9 should get us in the NCAAT pretty comfortably
8-10 will probably get us in but could be bubble
7-11 is more full on bubble for us
6-12 or worse and we're definitely out
We are currently #38 in kenpom so thats on the good side of things for now.
Without Jalen Reed I do suspect we will struggle against stronger front court teams. Our defense has been pretty rough at times this season against very inferior competition.

Middle of the pack in SEC. If they can improve on defense and get some support from King and Miller could surprise some teams. DJ, Nwoko and Sutton are the keys. If McKinnon is hitting it really opens the floor for them.

Depth will be tested in sec play
The starters are good enough

Our OOC schedule didn’t do much for us but we definitely didn’t hurt ourselves either going 12-1.
I predict 19-12 (7-11) and being on the bubble. BPI has LSU with the 13th toughest SOS remaining and that’s all conference games left so 8 conference wins would be enough to make it into the tournament. 7 will be very iffy but I’d lean an NIT bid with that record

It's McMahon's best team, in large part because DJ Thomas is the best player he's had. Thomas may be the best PG in the SEC.
Outside of Thomas, there's nothing special about the group but Sutton is a good player that will probably get you 15/8 in conference games. Nwoko plays well with Thomas and needs to stay out of foul trouble because it's not good behind him.
We'll win games when Mackinnon is knocking down 3s. I'm concerned about what happens when more athletic teams that play defense don't give him the kind of open looks he's been getting against the non con schedule.
They have a shot to make the tournament. SEC is down this year, so I think they need to go 9-9 to make it. I'd say it's 50-50 or slightly below.

Very good analysis. One thing I've noticed is how little Nwoko plays in the games I've watched - about 20 minutes. When he is out there he is very effective on the offensive side of the ball. He finishes well in the paint with hooks and short shots in the paint, not to mention dunks from PG feeds. He certainly has the body to match up with most SEC teams' centers.
We will miss Reed but we still Nwoko, Miller, and Sutton down low. Sutton's not a banger but he's 6'9", can score from anywhere, and is high-energy. Also, Tamba is not tall but he is aggressive and eats up a lot of rebounds.
I really am curious to see how this season plays out.

We will miss Jalen Reed a lot in SEC play. It's unfortunate that we have two years in a row where he got hurt early and it limits the season outlook.
If we get to 20 wins total (8 in the SEC), I think we're in no question. Less than that and you're on the bubble.
The interesting question is what record gets McMahon fired. I think if we're not at least on the NCAA bubble, he gets let go.

They are not a good 3pt shooting team. And will become even more detrimental in SEC play

When I looked at the schedule and input my admittedly scant knowledge of the rest of the SEC at this time - I spit out 7-11.
I figure our talent is about middle of the road relative to the conference as a whole this year.....like maybe 9th give or take a spot.
I really like our point guard and I like Nwoko too but foul issues seem to be a recurring problem for him as they were at State last year and limits his PT and effectiveness.
McKinnon can shoot but has cold spells and can be a liability defensively at times.
I like Sutton and I'm interested to see how well he does when competition steps up on a consistent basis.

Shot 31% from.three and 52% from field last night. Not great but not terrible . If that can be the floor and get some game that are better we’ll be in good shape. Also we have been able to adjust on bad shooting nights by taking the ball to the hole much like 2nd half of Texas Tech game. Defense does need to step up in SEC.

Miss the tournament and he will be GONE GONE GONE. None of this bubble nonsense. Only losers think that way.

Want to believe this year is different. But I don’t think it is. We’re better, yes, but not good enough to make the tournament. Hope I’m wrong and will gladly eat crow if so.

Might as well ride it out with McMahon till end of his contract

McKinnon and Sutton are streaky 3pt shooters. When they are on we are good and when they are not, our defense will not save us. King isn’t going to be the scorer he was at northeastern, but he is a decent on ball defender if he doesn’t get into foul trouble. Nwoko isn’t a quality defender against skilled big men, and is inclined to get into foul trouble. Teams with excellent guard play are likely going to eat us alive unless McMahon can figure out a defensive game plan that we can execute. Vandy, bama, Kentucky, and Texas come to mind, but the sec doesn’t seem as tough defensively as previous years. So wins are possible, but we might be in some shootouts.
