Why doesn't Michigan just hire Whittingham and call it a day?

Am I missing something?

177–88 record as a head coach, a Mountain West championship, two Pac 12 championships, defensive-minded like they love there, no scandals, 10-2 this season.

Is it his age? I'd hire him today and not look back.

Hasn't committed enough crimes or potential crimes to be considered a Meechigan coach. Should go out and threaten someone with a butter knife they'd hire him then.

Agreed. Hire a veteran coach to steer the ship for 3-4 years and then hire a rising star.

The only negatives are that he’s 66, and had one foot out the door at Utah for the past three seasons.

He’s been openly contemplating retirement for a while. Then when he finally walks away from Utah he immediately declares he’s not retired. It was an odd departure that needs some researching before pulling the trigger on hiring him.

I don’t really think it’s that odd. I think both parties were ready to move on and scalley told them to shite or get off the pot.

Willingham is a good answer if he’s willing to be a rental going in. But you don’t hire a 66 year old with possible health concerns if both parties don’t agree it’s a 1-3 year arrangement

I found this to be very weird. Had a one-off bad year in 2024, but otherwise a whole bunch of 10 win seasons (including 10-2 this year).

And, he's 66 as is stated.

I don't think Utah wanted to run him off, and I don't know why he'd leave there at this point if he wanted to keep coaching. Especially in the manner he left- not for another job, but to quit, and then say "hey I'm available if someone is interested".

Before I signed him to a multi-million dollar contract, I would want to investigate that thoroughly, to understand just what the hell happened.

I genuinely wonder how much that private equity deal affected his decision.

Not sure what you mean but the PE stuff probably played a part. It is a paradigm shift.

I personally don't see it taking off. The schools losing money and having a weak brand won't be attractive to the PE community. And the big dog programs won't want a PE group to have their hands in the pie or call shots.

The sweet spot is probably Utah's tier, if anything. Programs a notch below the big boys and looking for some kind of competitive gain from using leverage (usually debt but in this case equity).
