After watching a Vietnam documentary and reading a bit, it seems like Westmoreland dropped the ball at every turn. He wanted more troops, then sent them into these villages with a shitty plan at best. Is he on the list?

I give Westmorland a bit of a pass due to the fact he was very limited on options due to the level of micromanagement from Washington.

As for worst American general, the first that comes to mind is Lt. Gen. Loyd Fredendall. He was the first commander of US II Corps in the North African campaign. He is best know for the debacle of the Battle of Kasserine Pass.

I'll second that.

John Bell Hood.

Destroyed his army and killed multiple high ranking officers at Franklin and Nashville.

Not saying that Johnson would have held Atlanta, but the 22 July battle either doesn't happen or looks very different.

so dumb but not surprising from this board.

He's nowhere near any list of worst generals.

McClellan
Westmoreland
Hell Arnold is arguably easily the worst

Arnold may have actually been Washington’s best general. He let his ego ruin him.

From the Civil War, McClellan and Pillow.

The north could’ve won sooner if McClellan was motivated in any way. He was good at logistics, but couldn’t make a decision on the battlefield.

Pillow was only in his position bc he was buddy’s with James Polk. The coward abandoned his men at Fort Donelson leading the north to easily capture a crucial fort on the Mississippi. Grant has a funny quote about him,
quote:

“If I had got him [Pillow], I’d have let him go again. He will do us more good commanding you fellows.”

We did not want to win the Vietnam war. It was all about money.

Far from an expert but reading some Civil War stuff so ill submit George McClelland

Refused to ever attack unless he had overwhelming 3-1 odds and constantly over estimated the enemies numbers.
