Did saban try to come back to LSU before going to bama

A genuine question. I’ve had arguments with a bama fan who swears saban didn’t but if I remember correctly he tried to come back and skip turned it down.

at the time he was rumored to have inquired.
no clue how true those rumors were.

It was a not so well kept secret that Saban always wanted to come back and at times was practically begging to in the back channels… it was really Alleva who was putting a halt to this and it was part of the reason he was let go.

LSU and Miles were in the middle of a national championship run. Or had just won one.

Skip said in an interview that Saban's reps called but he couldn't just fire Les. Lsu just went to the Sugar Bowl. This was after the 2006 season.
In the same interview he talked about going to Florida to interview Del Rio, but when they went to meet him he wouldn't get out of the car because he didn't want his NFL contract voided. Then Les's reps called and he offered to pay his own buyout, so the group that was doing the hiring went with Les because he really wanted the job and they felt Del Rio wasn't all in on taking it.
The interview may have been on AFR one of the times Matt was out and Skip stayed the whole show and told stories about his whole career.

We were title contenders at the time under Les. Had we not been Saban would’ve been back at LSU after his NFL stint

Who knows, but Les had just cranked out two great seasons.. Would've been hard to fire Les then.
FTR, after the GOTC Les held a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over Nick but would never win again.
It wasn't that Nick was at Bama, it's what Les became here. The fallout resulting from Perrilloux is what did Les in, not Nick.

LSU was #3 to finish 2006 with a 11-2 record. It wasn't close to being open.

Not really. Saban left Miles a Ferrari and Les had that baby rev'd up in the mid-2000's.
Also to be fair, Saban wasn't HIM yet at the time. He only had one title before leaving the NFL for Bama.

How dare you. It was the 2 goats, Ott and Hanny

I can understand LSU denying at the time based on our current run with Miles. Saban wasn't SABAN yet and was leaving Miami without meeting expectations.

If LSU doesn’t pull those last second wins against Tennessee, Arky, and Ole Miss and we finish the 06 season 8-4 or worse, things could have gotten real interesting.

Yes but there just was no way they could justify getting rid of Les after back to back 10 win seasons which Saban never even did at LSU

I heard him saying he wanted to come back but the job was not open. Also watch this vide he tells you what he thinks:

didnt have to fire. shoulda always kept close ties with saban. shoulda had outs/contingency's in the contract. Id have paid nick and brought him back in some form so bama did not get him then find a way to part with les.
hindsight shows that woulda been the correct move. heck it was the right move then. you always invest in the known (saban) before the unknown(miles). anyone who thought milkes was as good as saban even after 2006 is lying to themselves.

A lot of people forget that Les had a pretty epic run of about 8-9 years. They just remember the last years.
