New rule for Notre Dame

Unbelievable BS continues. Beginning next year If Notre Dame is ranked 12th or higher they are guaranteed a spot in playoffs. If that rule was in effect this year they would have replaced MiamI. They make new rules up to appease. I suspect they will have an Alabama rule at some point if they failed to get in,

So they just make them #13 if it’s a coin flip.

What? How is this even a thing? Frick ND.

I, for one, am very thankful the expanded playoff format has endend the controversy on who should play for the title.

Simple fix to this if you are a commissioner of the 4 major conferences refuse to play notre Dame. They can't build a resume if they don't play anyone worth a damn. Force them to join a conference. Problem solved.

Technically the rule is for any independent team. But there’s only two of those right now so we all know who it was written for. Of course all the conferences signed off on this.

Look at their schedule, they will be in the top 10 come next December.
I think Edna Karr went through a tougher gauntlet than they have too

Just like the BCS. To get an at-large bud in one of the old BCS bowls, I believe you had to be ranked 4 or higher…unless you were ND who only had to be #12.

Just being back the BCS system and take the top ranked 12 that the computer spits out. If you are a conference champion and not ranked in the top 12 then too bad, you should join a stronger conference.
Two Group of 5 teams in this year because of the top 5 conference champions is the real problem.

Probably be 16 teams next year so everyone in the top 12 would be in anyway. Joke ultimately on ND

I would guess thats their equivalent to the auto bid for conference chamoions

Yep. It could be a 24 team playoff and number 25 would be bitching about not making it.

Do you have a link for this BullCrap?

I saw the BCS/computer rankings that were used before and should have been used this time. You could see from this committee that politics ruled the day. They felt like they HAD to put in an ACC team after what happened 2 years ago...couldn't put in Virginia...couldn't put in Duke...so Miami, come on down! Notre Dame was ABOVE both Alabama and Miami, so there's that.

They would have been better served revising the College Football Playoff to conference teams only. Notre Dame would have been on the phone to the Big 10 and/or ACC tomorrow morning.

Their toughest game outside of Miami, USC and SMU next year is Navy.
That’s a guaranteed 9 win schedule with only 3 weeks they need to actually show up. 11 wins minimum should have to be the standard for them to ever make the playoff again

Yeah I saw that the day of the playoffs news breaking. Some group of 3 ND fans on a podcast were talking about being snubbed and deciding against playing a bowl game. Said at least they don't have to deal with this crap next year because of the new ND Rule.

It’s amazing regular people like us can think of this, but the people in high ranking positions act like this would be absurd. Blackball them until they play by the same rules as everyone else.

That’s not exactly how it worked. Anyone ranked in the top 14 with at least 9 wins was eligible for an at-large bid, as long as there were slots remaining and one of the bowls picked the team.
There were 5 BCS bowls (including the national championship) which meant 10 teams got BCS bids.
There were 6 automatic qualifier (AQ) conferences. The champions of those 6 conferences had automatic bids to BCS bowls regardless of their ranking.
Notre Dame got an automatic bid if they finished in the top 8 (not top 12).
The highest-ranked non-AQ conference champion got an automatic bid if they finished in the top 12.
Lastly, the highest ranked non-champion from each AQ conference was guaranteed a bid if they finished in the top 4 of the BCS rankings. Basically it meant if a team from an AQ conference was ranked #3 or #4 teams, they were guaranteed a spot even if their conference didn’t have any remaining bowl ties. E.g. if the Sugar Bowl was the national championship game in a year where an SEC team finished #3. But this basically became a non-issue once they split the national championship into a separate game (rather than being one of the 4 bowls).
So in a given year you had 10 available spots with 6-10 automatic bids. The remaining (up to 4) bids went to at-large teams selected by the bowls. Notre Dame was only guaranteed one of the 10 BCS spots if they finished in the top 8, which isn’t that absurd IMO. Guaranteeing them a CFP slot at #12 is much worse.
