If tweet fails to load, click here. When Lutz was here, he was hit or miss. Young kickers get the yips and if you just be patient, they can kick themselves out of their slump.
Hopefully that's how Cade York is with us.

I think he was almost perfect in camp and perfect in preseason.

Yes, I thought the same, but we talking about practice, lol

Lutz had his two worst seasons when the Saints went with Grupe. He missed 2021 due to a core injury that required multiple surgeries and a long rehab. There was some question as to whether he would return to form.
Lutz was 23-28(82.1%) in 2020 then 23-31(74.2%) in 2022.
In Grupe's previous two seasons, he was 30-37(81.1%) in 2023 then 27-31(87.1%) in 2024. He had a great camp and preseason; there was reason to believe he would continue to improve.
But he did not, and I have no issues with cutting him.

It's such a crap shoot situation. On the one hand, Grupe will probably get another shot next year, get a job and kick a lot better than he is right now and maybe just develop like Lutz did. Given that we are not really winning anything right now in any event, maybe you just let him work through it.
On the other hand, you also don't want to adopt a losing attitude and keeping a kicker barely over 70% these days is a loser attitude. You want your players and the organization to think like winners even though they are not.
All things considered, cutting him was the right call.

They just signed Roach to a big extension too.

The new kickoff rules now favor big leg kickers. Groupe may have a hard time finding work considering he is not a 55+ yard weapon

York was very good in college. Hope he’s figured it out

Not sure I understand this logic. Please elaborate.

If you get the ball on the 40, big leg kickers only need a fiest down and some change to be in FG range...huge advantage

Where are you getting the 40 from. The average starting position after kickoff is still between the 25 and the 30.

Because the team is tanking (ie, losing on purpose), but has to pretend that they’re not doing so.

Lutz hit some huge kicks for us during his tenure.
Grupe missed his biggest kicks (Carrs first year wed have won the NFCS if Lutz was our K - huge misses by PeeWee in Houston and GB and I think vs Atl).

DA would have made the playoffs his second year. Grupe cost us the Green Bay game definitely and probably the Texans game that year

Exactly. Saints were 2-0 in 2023 & Grupe missed the kick at Green Bay that would have most likely won us that game. We win that game who knows what happens from there. I was at that game. I will never forgive Grupe for that miss.

We were also up 17-0 and played as retarded as possible to blow that lead. And GB would've had 45 seconds to get a FG and beat us.

Waiting to cut Grupe
Not signing Araiza
We're stupid

With a 2-9 record you don’t even need any FG kicker. Go for it EVERY TIME in red zone. If you score go for two. What have they got to lose except another game.
