Do you think or feel based on current personal and overall economic conditions that the end of year Christmas/Thanksgiving retail purchases will be in sharp decline compared to previous years? I just dont feel inclined to do much buying

I think you’ll see both total spending, where people are shopping and what they are buying change a bit.

I think people are going to spend much less. In fact; I won’t believe any data point that suggests otherwise.

Credit card debt is through the roof, the economy is tight and many people are barely scraping by. The discretionary spending just won’t be there as people don’t feel like they have money.

Which will force them to spend at places like Wal-Mart or online deal hunting. So I think budget retailers like Wal-Mart will see strong numbers. Amazon may as well. More upscale type retailers will not see these same sort of sales, is my guess. People will be value hunting.

I think this years shopping will be very utilitarian. Life’s essentials and simple luxuries. Clothing, kitchenware, and restaurant/retail gift cards. I don’t see big ticket items like televisions or high end electronics doing well.

I think the retailers see this coming too. I’m not seeing the usual seasonal hiring common this time of year.

I think sales will be up low single digits. Shoppers will be more value focused.

I’m sure after the last 2 weeks we all feel less wealthy since stock market has been taking it in the bottoms.

I never bet against the American consumer. People will shop and find a way to do so.

Several segments on this last week on CNBC

Some speculated that we’d see no drop off in present buying but would see a drop in decorations purchase.

Other speculated that we’d see a decline in all retail

Pay attention to Black Friday sales

Honestly whatever the media is dooming about is almost always overblown.

Yes, prices are a problem, but inflation is undoubtedly not as bad as a few years ago, when their was significantly less doom & gloom being blasted across all media platforms.

The dollar is constantly devalued, and is ALWAYS decreasing.
If we accept that above as fact, which it is, then your statement is false, which it is.

Consumer sentiment has been in the shitter for some time, yet consumer spending still chugs along.

Credit card debt is higher today than it was yesterday, and this has been the case for the past 12 years. Adjusted for inflation, non-household debt is lower today than it was in 2008/2009.

I'm not totally poo-pooing your whole post or picking on you, because I do think the middle class on downwards are struggling, but I do want to point out what we feel is going to happen and what actually happens in regards to consumer spending are rarely the same. Americans like stuff, and Santa's elves are still working a shite-ton of overtime.

Less doom and gloom being blasted on media platforms? For all four years of Biden #MAGA acted like they couldn’t afford milk and bread while showing pictures of their international vacations.

I tend to believe people are just growing more and more pessimistic across the board. Too much media in our lives for most people would be my guess. Too much overthinking.

Since when has this stopped women from spending money?

I do find it odd that they crave pumpkin spice being rolled out in late September, and start throwing up Xmas decorations the day after Halloween, but will refuse to shop until the last minute.

It’ll be a large decline. Retailers are headed for a disaster.

I'm saying pessimism on the economy isn't the indicator it once was. At least for now.
