Oblique Injury - new?

I’ve watched football my whole life. I’ve heard of injuries all that time - knee, head, Achilles, back, shoulder, etc.
I’ve never heard of an oblique injury until this year. Seems like it’s new in tbe NFL (I don’t watch anymore), I think it’s new in college.
Only player I’ve heard of getting it is Nuss at LSU, and Walker Howard at ULL.
Both of whom played together briefly at LSU coincidentally.
Has anyone heard of players getting this in the 90’s, 2000’s, ever?

Probably called upper body or torso injury in the past. The designations have gotten much more specific for injuries.

Yeah LSU had a QB deal with a similar injury just a few years ago…

Is that the injury that sidelined Myles Brennan during his "breakout" season?

Derek Carr had one a couple years ago.
Manning started a couple games last season because Ewers had one.
Prevents full torque motion.

I see this injury listed often in MLB due to the torso twisting when swinging the bat, here is an MLB example and an NCAA Football example...
Pena Oblique Injury
Texas QB Last Year
Ewers Oblique Strain
Geaux Tigers!

They used to call it a rib injury

MB tore his muscles that I believed required surgery. Not a real comparison.

his "breakout" season
He did have 1100 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 quarters.

An oblique injury ended Myles Brennan's 2020 season. Did you just start watching football this year?
An oblique injury kept Dylan Crews on the DL for a couple months this year. They happen plenty

That’s what Walker Howard had. Torn oblique, required surgery.

When Drew Brees suffered an oblique injury last offseason that forced him to miss two weeks of training camp, no one thought too much of it.
Apparently, the injury may have impacted him more than everyone thought. According to Mike Triplett of ESPN, Brees said that the injury played a part in him getting away from his mechanics as 2014 rolled on.
quote:
"I think I got a little away from my mechanics last year as the season wore on," Brees told ESPN. "Part of it is probably attributable to the oblique injury in camp. I probably came back -- not too soon -- but wanted to come back so soon, that on the road to recovery I altered my mechanics and overcompensated and developed some bad habits."

Humans didn't have obliques back then. Very recent evolutionary development

We all knew something wasn't right. The dude just didn't have the zip on his passes like he had all last season. Then you pair that up with a bad oline getting hit pretty much every time you throw the ball. It's going to make qb's rush reads, or have their eyes down.
He lost his confidence, and started playing not to mess up. Based off of last year he's going to get an opportunity in the NFL. Hopefully he ends up on a decent team where he can learn, and be behind a decent oline. Not get thrown to the wolves right off the get go.

Yep, brees played with that injury all year in 2014. And he couldnt throw the ball more than 20-25 yards. Very similar to nuss
