I might get blasted for this but I’m just putting it out there. Why not take a look at Dave Aranda? I know he has been mediocre at Baylor but he’s a defensive coach, has history at LSU, doesn’t come with baggage…with your resources and top recruiting area I think he could be successful.

Thoughts?

Because even in 2019, we had to fight hard a few times to outscore the other team due to the defense fricking around.

He can’t recruit well. He needs to be DC only if he comes back.

I'm the biggest Dave fan out there but he may be a little too eccentric for a job like LSU. Of course it would be fine if he was fielding top 20 defenses every year at Baylor but they've been pretty soft on that side of the ball outside of the 2021 team.

That formula worked for y'all and Elko. Except that Elko crushed it at Duke. DA hasn't.

I'd argue this isn't as important as it used to be. Previously a HC had to build relationships and constantly cater to players, parents, HS coaches, etc. Now, it's more of a business negotiation. LSU worked their arse off to recruit Bryce Underwood. They developed a relationship with him over the course of multiple years. He was "committed" to LSU for a year. Hell, LSU let their OC walk, after having the #1 offense in the nation, in order to keep the QB coach that was seen as critical for landing Underwood. In the end, Underwood just did what most pro players do. He took the best salary offer.

One may argue LSU and Kelly paid dearly by choosing a perceived recruiting advantage over coaching ability in choosing Sloan as OC. So in this era of college football is it more important to have the better strategic/technical HC than a great "recruiter"?

Recruiting is a relic of a bygone past, along with the pride of representing a university or state as a student athlete.

Money is the game. Football is just a means to get the money. Its the only thing that matters, the football part is becoming more and more irrelevant.

We don’t need a coach who can recruit, we need well paid agents to steer recruits toward well paid contracts to hopefully come together for one season of magic before we rinse and repeat.

It’s a study in self cannibalization. But hey, students deserve to be paid like professionals right?

8-4
7-5

Admirable, but I wouldn't call it crushing it. Diaz is currently producing similar results.

Great DC, Horriable HC. No personality to recruit, hates public speaking, hes imo Dennis Allen (or any other failed HC who is a great Coordinator) of College football

Time to move back to the lower 48. That cold is getting to your brain.

Man, I'd rather a coach who has had success in G5 than one who has struggled at Baylor.

Not HC material, not at this level.

Good coordinator.

LSU has set a really high standard for itself firing Kelly. It just makes no sense to fire a perennial 10 win guy in Kelly and then go get Dave Aranda.

Counterpoint: I know it wasn't just about W-L with Kelly, he sucked on several levels. And in all likelihood, LSU is going to hire a non-perennial 10 win guy anyway, so on paper LSU might be taking a step back regardless.

Yeah but Duke was 2-9 and 3-9 the two years prior to Elko.

He may actually flourish in that role.

Isn't Aranda a pretty odd duck too? Likable, but still odd?

Excellent defensive coach.
I am not sure he has the personality to be a great head coach.
I heard him speak a few times when he was here. Sharp guy but he sounds like a boring economics professor.

Kind of like Dennis Allen.
