We can all agree CBK didn't deserve a $100M contract, but would you take a smaller buyout?

I don't understand all this back and forth about his buyout because, thanks to Woodward, he has LSU bent over a barrel and there is not really anything LSU can do. It's now being reported Kelly wants the entire amount of the buyout, which I don't understand why that was in question, in the first place.

If I'm owed $54M, and you had to pay me until 2031 for me to get every penny, then so be it.

Would you leave money on the table and take less?

I'd negotiate a lump sum with no offset and go coach at a smaller school for a few million.

Idk, im not a greedy person. I’d settle for 35-40 million. Would also be a publicity win.

I dont blame him tho

They are most likely working out how much and over what timeframe. Both sides can propose anything if the other side agrees to change the original agreement.

Obviously you'd take less to get the money up front, just like nearly everyone does with the lottery/powerball. Just a matter of how much. Plenty to take into consideration on whether LSU would leak damaging personal info by fighting for termination with cause and/or if he wants to coach again or work in television, you are more likely to take a lump sum now so that money from lsu isn't reduced.

Kelly and LSU signed a contract. I would want what the contract owes me.

Yes. Anyone who understands time value of money would take a lower lump sum now with mitigation removed as long as the offer isn't too low. $20M and $25M are too low. $30M would be decent, $35M would get Kelly to roughly $54M over the same time frame and he doesn't have to worry about mitigation which means more money in his pocket over the next 5-6 years.

I would take 45 million right now, but I’m 74 years old. A younger man might wait.

No way would I settle for 25 million.

It's a gamble either way, but being in mid 60's and up, lump sum settlement is attractive.

Some of you seem like you’ve never negotiated in your lives.

If Kelly has any intention of coaching again, it would make sense to negotiate a lump sum buyout with no offset. He takes the lump sum, gets back into coaching and makes more on aggregate than if he just sat on the couch (which would still require him to make a good faith effort interviewing for a new gig) the next 5 years.

I would in a hearbeat take $30MM now vs. $50MM over the next 8 years.

Bingo.

Kelly is going to eventually take a lump sum. It's just a matter of if/when LSU hits the right number. It's only been 3 weeks. There's now immediate incentive to for him to agree to a "lowball" settlement offer right now.

I’m doing that now.

But the man can live very well on 900 K a year too and have a steady income until he’s 70.
No way would a guy settle.

If I win the lottery, I’m taking the lump sum instead of the annuity.

Same applies here

Would you rather $54M spread out over 6 years, or $30M right now?

That's the negotiation that's going on.

I'm sure there's a number for Kelly that he would be happy with all up front. He's not getting $54M up front. The conversation being had is what is the lump sum amount he would take up front, and it won't be the full $54M.

LSU can continue to pay him the $54M over 6 years, which they are contracted to do, and he can get another job right now and LSU will pay whatever teh difference is over those 6 years. I think most people assume he will be getting another coaching job, so you'd think LSU would be fine with paying the full amount over 6 years b/c they won't end up paying him the full $54M if he gets another job.

Say he gets a job were he makes $5m/yr. LSU is still going to have to pay him $5M/yr give or take a few hundred thousand.
or
Kelly can get $30M from LSU right now, and then still go get that same job and make $5M/yr

If Kelly wants to keep coaching, then it's probably better for him to take a lump sum from LSU right now
If he wants to retire, then yeah, he should just sit back and collect his $54M over the next few years.
