I've been a player and student of this game called football for a long time but never have heard of something that I saw last night.
One of MVB's early plays saw the pocket collapse and he bolts upfield for a first down. He slides 2 yards past the line to gain. Officials review and rule him down where they determined his hips were starting to lower??? Shy 1/2 yard from first down! Next play procedure (of course) and we never do get a first.
I take it y'all have seen this before??? That has got to be the worst rule in this game.

Nobody within 5 yards of him. He saw first down marker and started slide to keep drive going. Except the Ref cheated him.

Unfortunately it was the correct call. He should have gone head first running like a banshee in the wind.

Unfortunately it was a mistake from a young player. The call was correct that the player is considered “down” at the point where he slides and “gives himself up.”

I would expect a student of the game to actually know the rules, but that's just me.

It was absolutely the correct call.

Well the officials on the field called it a first down.

My gripe was reviewing that in the first place.

It was odd for the officials to check the replay. It seems like that should have been a challenge flag kind of play.

that’s been the rule since at least the 90s.
it’s not very often that the slide is literally within inches of the line to gain on a crucial down, so it rarely comes in to question.
but it’s always been the rule.

Well, to be fair, he didn’t claim to be a student with a passing grade. Kind of like our QBs.

Maybe technically, but do you think for a second that if the bama qb did exactly the same thing that it go for review? and be ruled short? you are delusional if you do.

Aren’t you down at wherever you give yourself up at? Or is that an nfl rule?

Has it? I think it’s more recent than that.

No bud it wasn't. It's the correct translation tmof the rule ( hips dip and that's where the ball is placed). However, when he dipped his hips he was already beyond the first down marker ( ball as well).

Guaranteed if that’s Bama making that play it never gets reviewed. The officials just move on and first down Bama. We saw that in the potential punt touchback not even being reviewed. That to me is the BS about the whole thing. No calls for Bama(personal fouls ignored), lack of reviews that might hurt Bama, and unlimited reviews against LSU.

I'm pretty sure it's the Kenny Pickett rule. He faked a slide. The rule was changed to refs spotting the ball as soon as the QB starts their slide at the farthest point of the the ball.

The NFL rule is different.

just looked it up … 1985
2021 they added wording to include “simulated slides” to cover the Kenny Picket play.
But the rule itself has been in existence since 1985 and the sliding player is down where they initiate the slide because that’s where they are “giving themselves up”
