Why New Yorkers really elected Mamdani: an op-Ed that sounds right

LINK
All the clamoring about a Muslim Socialist being mayor of NYC is missing the mark, according to this. I could have never voted for him, but this reasoning for why they did makes sense.
There’s a lot of truth here, and more at the link.

quote:
Mamdani didn’t win because New York suddenly fell in love with socialism.
He won because he captured something every politician should be listening to right now — a deep frustration that the system doesn’t feel fair anymore
quote:
And here’s the twist: That frustration isn’t confined to struggling families or low-income voters. It’s spreading among people who are doing fine — the educated, ambitious, upwardly mobile professionals who were supposed to be living the dream but can’t shake the feeling that they’re falling behind.
quote:
They’ve done everything right — the schools, the hours, the hustle — and yet they still feel stuck.
Rents climb faster than salaries. Taxes eat away their paychecks. Buying a home feels impossible.
There’s a lot of truth here, and more at the link.

The Dems caused all of that though.

There is indeed a lot of truth to people feeling stuck, but thinking socialism can fix that is next-level insanity.

They have that feeling after just over a decade of Democrat leadership so their idea is they need to go further Left?
It sounds like they didn't really think that through too well.

More government intervention is likely to make these things worse. Sure the poorest will get more direct cash in some form and it’ll feel like a win for them but it will still be scraps and the cost of everything will far outpace that.
Then the rest of us holding the bag in the middle get nothing extra but pushed further down the economic ladder closer to poverty.

I cannot agree more. We gave lobbies all the power for corporate greed. It’s not a capitalist society, it’s a bought and sold power system by the elite. Taxes, insurance, healthcare, inflation, education, housing, etc. It’s a fricking shite show and people are done. Trump didn’t cause it but he surely isn’t helping it fast enough. Stop the over seas nonsense and fix America. We voted for that!

There certainly is.
I get it. This is all the result of government ruining the value of a dollar and over regulating and these private equity/Wall Street shitbags outsourcing jobs and bringing in illegals to tank wages so they can make a few percent more in profits.
Posted on 11/5/25 at 10:18 am to High C
Why? Because hundreds of thousands of common sense people have moved from that shithole and the only people left are either ones who couldn't afford to move or b) all of the illegals they bussed in

the op-ed is incredibly stupid and childish
who the frick ever promised you that life is fair? so they get their feelies hurt and embrace a muslim marxist .... you deserve what happens to you, but keep it in NYC

There is a lot of truth there.
Our household income is easily in the top 10%. It doesn’t feel like that much, tbh. Inflation be trippin.
But believing that a guy who ignores the basic principles of scarcity is going to be able to address that issue is like having sex with a prostitute because you’re scared of STDs.

I would say the prevailing bipartisan influenced nature of our economy has caused it

There’s a growing class of New Yorkers who don’t fit our usual political categories. They’re not the working poor or the wealthy elite. They’re somewhere in between.
He's uncovered a before-unknown demographic - The Middle Class.
Cutting edge stuff.

This is why you lost last night and will continue to lose going forward.
Zero accountability and responsibility from MAGA. Its always someone else's fault.
Train is moving with or without you.

It's probably the most under represented group in the country politically though
Most notable policy shifts either help the impoverished or the already wealthy
Middle class income voters nationwide feel like they've been sold out

People need to calm down (both Democrats and Republicans).
Some people bought so much Zohran stock during the extended battle with Andrew Cuomo that the “Mamdani is the future” spin is inevitable. But is winning 50 percent of the vote in New York City all that impressive?
Democrats winning in NJ and Va is about as impressive as Republicans winning in Oklahoma and Utah.
It's not the earthquake everyone thinks and there is still a year left until middterms which is an eternetiy.
It's like a fan of a NFL team who lost the first game saying "Ok, that's it, season over". No it isn't. Dems and Reps alike need to calm down. The media is just talking about it because it's an easy way to fill time until the next commercial break.

Life isn't fair.
Translation: We have raised a generation a pussies.
The issue is young people want stuff yesterday and don't understand having to work for something, and realizing, it might mean not being the first to have it.
In the professional world I've seen young kids come in with their BA and after one year showing frustration of not having that hefty salary and corner office with the window view.
Yes, you have knowledge, but all you really did was show you could attend class for 4 years, study, and pass tests.
Before an employer will invest in you, they have to have an comfortable assurance that you are engaged and invested in them.

I know, just the way he described it was funny - like it was some stealth group no one had ever heard of, despite it being the largest demographic in the country.
