RATS EVOLVED TO HUNT BATS AND SCIENTISTS ARE TERRIFIED

In northern Germany, rats have started eating bats. Not dead bats. Not grounded bats. Flying bats.

A four-year study just confirmed they're leaping out of the darkness, snatching them mid-air, and dragging them down to devour, by the thousands, inside urban hibernation caves.

Scientists now fear this gruesome new predator-prey link could turn rats into mobile virus sponges, absorbing pathogens like coronaviruses and paramyxoviruses from bats and carrying them closer to human homes, farms, and cities.

One rat colony could consume over 2,000 bats a winter.

That's not just a creepy wildlife headline.

It's a flashing red siren for the next zoonotic spillover.

I'd say more "learned" than "evolved."

They don't have some special bat hunting appendages

Not as cool as rats teaching turtles martial arts to be able to fight warthogs and rhinos, but cool nonetheless.

I’ve always heard that after humanity is done, the roaches and rats will rule this planet. Sequel to “PLANET OF THE APES”.

Yet…haha.

It would be interesting if this is simply a learned behavior at this point and/or if the “learned behavior” had led to some adaption.

It’s going to be hell with the bats and rats start working together. Bats dropping plague rats on the human populace would be frightening!
