I know WV is famous for pepperoni rolls, where would one find authentic ones? And not some gourmet hipster type place, I mean the real thing. The only place I've seen them while traveling through was in a bag in a convenience store, and those weren't great.

Making pepperoni takes a long time.
Takes months before you know if you fricked it up.

There use to be an Italian restaurant chain that had them. I think it was called Gino's.
I also would buy those at a convenience store and dip them in garlic/ranch dip.

I've never heard of that. But I'll eat it based on the name alone

I have no idea other than someone's kitchen. My father-in-law makes (from Madison, WV) makes GREAT pepperoni rolls. I've never had a decent one at a restaurant or pizza joint though. (Not even at Gino's in Huntington.)

There is an episode of The Basement Hangout on YouTube where they make pepperoni rolls on a pellet grill. One of the guys is from WV, and he said “normally you get them in a gas station.”

I live in Weirton (basically even less WV than Wheeling) but they do generally seem to be the kind of thing that everyone knows how to make, but no one actually sells them. Best ones I've had were at a church event

That being said, find the oldest grocery store/deli/bakery you can and they'll probably have them

I bought some from Harper’s Old Country Store at Seneca Rocks back when I worked in DC, brought them to the office and they were a hit. Like someone else mentioned, you can get them in gas stations and they’re not terrible.

The gas station is the real thing. It’s pepperoni in a basic roll. It’s not going to change your life, but I’ve happily eaten plenty of them

Yes, everyone knows WV has the best.

To answer your question OP, country club bakery claims to have the first ever made and the best but they aren't.The best that are authentic is a gas station in Boone WV called V-Mart.

My wife is from Fairmont, WV. She said the original pepperoni rolls are made by Country Club Bakery in Fairmont. You can buy them online and have them shipped to you. She makes her own which are really good. But it takes a while to make a batch. I like hers better than any we bought in WV.

Like I said above you, they aren't close to being that authentic or the best.

My personal favorites are actually in the Pittsburgh strip district at Sunseri's. Country Club Bakery in Fairmont (WV) would be a close 2nd. The ones from V-Mart in Boone are not traditional and are made with pizza dough, not dinner rolls. The originals used stick pepperoni, not sliced.
