Is there anything this man won't try? Got to hand it to him for trying to pushing humanity forward.

quote:

After Ars wrote a story on the potential of autonomous assembly to construct large data centers in space, Musk responded on X by saying that Starlink satellites could be used for this purpose.

“Simply scaling up Starlink V3 satellites, which have high speed laser links would work,” he said on the social media site X. “SpaceX will be doing this.”

Musk’s interest in space-based data centers significantly raises the profile of the nascent industry. Proponents of the idea say the advantages are clear: free, limitless power from the Sun and none of the messy environmental costs of building these facilities on Earth (where opposition is starting to grow). Critics say it is economically impractical to build these facilities in space and that supporters underestimate the technology needed to make it work.

Seems legit. This the same guy who claims his car might be able to fly and that he can dig a tunnel from NYC to London for under a trillion dollars.

Its funny when people point out one of his fails like they are discrediting his many many wins.

Inventors/visionaries often fail, but much is learned along the way, a lot of times leading to even bigger discoveries. It’s amazing people love to hate on him because of TDS.

It’s an interesting concept. You wouldn’t need the crazy high water consumption to cool everything.

FYI, Bezos has said this will happen soon too so it's not just Elon working on it

Jeff Bezos predicts that large-scale data centers will be built in orbit within 10 to 20 years

If the International Space Station can exist in space, then why can't data centers?

Power supply for modern data centers is a challenge here on earth. A modern data centers uses the power of 100,000 homes; an AI data center like 20x that.

The international space station is powered one some solar arrays and uses the power of about 40 homes.

He didn't say it would happen tomorrow but Elon just happens to own a company that is heavily investing in research of solar and battery power, in case you didn't know

It will become feasible as battery storage and solar both become more efficient.

Also, around 40% of the power consumption of data centers is from cooling. Space is cold so a lot less power is needed

Elon musk likes to float big ideas that are obviously silly and unrealistic because he is autistic and likes the attention. The power is one challenge, then there’s the whole accessibility thing. Hardware breaks down. And these things are physically massive, and you need to push it out into space, unless we going to deploy lots of rack clusters floating in Orbit.

This a guy who wants to talk about colonizing mars when we have very real challenges here on earth. It’s fun, I guess, but pure science fiction.
