Quote from the GOAT on Gameday this morning
Posted on 11/1/25 at 2:10 pm
Posted on 11/1/25 at 2:10 pm
“What do Dabo, Ryan Day and Kirby have in common? They had zero head coaching experience before they were hired.”
Now they’re responsible for half of the national championships in the past decade (and an additional 5 appearances in the NCG).
I’ve seen a lot of negativity towards the idea, but especially with Verge at the helm do not be surprised if Kelvin Sheppard ends up as a top 3 candidate. According to Grok there are 10 NFL head coaches that were hired from coordinator spots before the age of 40. Sheppard is 37.. maybe he wants to stay in the league but money talks, and LSU can get him cheap compared to just about any other candidate.

Sorry, to be LSU's head coach you have to have 30 years head coaching experience, be 45 years old, have at least 1 national championship, willing to take a 3 year/$20 million contract with no buyout and a clause that you owe it all back if you have a <10 win season

Sure, but all three had a lot of coaching EXPERIENCE before the hire
A guy like Kelvin Sheppard does NOT.

LSU "fan base" does not have patience to grow a team like those guys did.

How do you get from that quote to Kelvin Sheppard?
Posted on 11/1/25 at 2:25 pm to crotiger0307
It is all about who gets the better roster and maintain it.
Posted on 11/1/25 at 2:27 pm to crotiger0307
Enough is this comparison!! Kirby Dabo and Ryan day had DECADES of experience in the COLLEGE game!! Hell shep has barely half of a decade in any level of coach. ITS NOT THE SAME.

He doesn’t have a tenure of coaching experience yet he’s elevated himself to the DC of one of the better teams in the NFL.
Maybe ability trumps longevity in some cases?

ok, can we name every failed head coach who also never had head coaching experience before?
I mean, every successful coach at one point didn't have experience, that is a dumb comparison.
The less experience someone has, the more of a crap shoot it would be.

Shep has made it very clear that his goal is to be a HC and I don't think that means strictly in the NFL. Hes on like a 1 year $900k prove it contract with the Lions. He would 100% be willing to come if offered. I just can't see a world where we offer him the keys. And im not sure that he would be able to build out a quality staff around him at this time in his career. And ftr I think Shep will have an outstanding coaching career, just won't be here

Goodness how long must this stupid comparison go on. All of those guys had extensive experience as coordinators
Kelvin Sheppard has been a DC for less than half a season with an already established playoff team and has zero college experience
Stop this nonsense

And it helps if your name rhymes with Sick Naban.

We don’t know anything about his ability to coach the college game, recruit, run a program. Defensive coordinator in the NFL is football only. There way more to being a college head coach than even an nfl head coach. Get someone with ability AND longevity! Why not do that if you can?

Kelvin Sheppard’s resume don’t look any thing like those 3 when they got the job. Quit being so stupid
Posted on 11/1/25 at 2:31 pm to crotiger0307
I have no problem with a coordinator
But I don’t think KS had the track record just yet. And the last thing I want is a coach depending on staff in every area. I want one that’s keeping a play sheet for now. Or capable of holding one anyway.

What did all three of them have that Kelvin doesn't?
A shitload of experience on a college coaching staff. A shitload of experience recruiting.
He's not a candidate.

I don’t know if he has been doing it long enough, but at the same time I wouldn’t be mad at it. I’d rather him a Plan B than some other no-name inexperienced guy.

Just to play devils advocate.
Dan Campbell, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, Jerod Mayo, and Demeco Ryans had very little if any coordinating experience prior to their NFL HC jobs

Brian Kelly had the best resume of any coach in America, how did that end up working out?
I’m not saying Shep will be the coach or is even my pick. I’m just saying we are in a new age of football and the big game hunting days may very well have passed us by.
