Prudent to Stay Out of the Coaching Carousel this Year

I am as done with Kelly as much as the next poster. And it is not my money, so I ultimately do not care if someone is willing to fund Kelly's buyout. More power to them. But...
No one has a firm grasp on this coaching landscape. LSU plays professional football now and it needs to start acting like it.
The NFL is making head coaches out of all the guys that would have tried to cut their teeth in college 10 years ago. The field of potential candidates is diminished to retreads. These guys are either not capable of coaching in the modern era or too expensive to allow for a competitive roster.
The responsibilities of the "college" head coach are different than they were even five years ago. No single person can build and manage the roster and coach a team. The NFL figured this out 20 years ago. The position needs to be divided in two. LSU needs an empowered General Manager and a separate Head Coach. Since responsibilities of the coach should be fewer, the pay should be less.
Resources are limited. Money has to be allocated between coaching and roster. In the NFL, most starters make more than the head coach. That will become true in college football as well. Another reason why coaching pay should go down.
Woodward has not demonstrated that he is capable of thinking strategically. He is playing checkers, always trying to get a King. He is not capable of doing anything other than overpaying for a name.
Given these conditions it is better to let Florida and Penn State cripple themselves, or cripple Ole Miss, with stupid and expensive coaching contracts, just as LSU is currently crippled. Smart money would be spent on an actual coach and not a coaching name.
It is only a matter of time before "colleges" are allowed to contract directly with football players and collective bargaining comes into place. Since we are stuck with Kelly for the near term it is better to keep trying to upgrade the roster rather than upgrade the coach and the roster at the same time.
Once "college" football stabilizes, hire a coach at the new rate and build a roster.

That actually makes some sense. You're gonna get downvoted all to hell.

I agree with the gist of your post, but what if this stabilization takes 10 years?

Nice insight, Mrs. Kelly

This sounds pretty accurate. Until this settles down, college football is going to be hard to watch.

I totally agree the juice is not worth the squeeze this cycle. Getting locked into a big contract with any of the available guys is asking for trouble.
Have to hope next cycle some young up-and-comer is there.

I don't think CBK is gonna work out here, but I agree, I think we should keep him until the next cycle. I'd even be okay with giving him a chance next year, firing him mid season, and being the first team in the new coaching pool in 2026.
UNLESS Woodward has an off the record deal in place with Kiffin or Sumrall. Go ahead and pull the trigger.

Sumrall
I watch Sumrall coach every weekend. He isn't ready. He has horrible, Les Miles level, clock management skills. Yes, he beat Duke and Army; but, he could have easily done it without giving either team a last s shot to tie the game.

The problem is that its Florida and Penn State with openings this year, but there's probably going to be big name programs with openings next year too.
Depending on what coaches survive the 2025 season, you could have openings at Auburn, Florida State, and Wisconsin next year. Clemson could be a possibility next year because Dabo's seat is going to keep getting warmer if they don't turn things around.

We have this already jackass. Apparently you need to catch up on what’s going on. We stole ol
Boy back from ole Miss to handle roster.
Kelly has dozens of people helping and doing work. How do you think he has time to go golfing multiple times a week during the season instead of actually coaching

LSU has done that with Austin Thomas. Paying BK the salary LSU did, with the buyout he has, is just market value which was ironically set by Scott Woodward when he hired Jimbo Fisher at A&M.
It was a good hire at the time, and if Woodward secured the resources to pay him, then it shouldn’t matter to us.
The problem now is that those same people paying BKs salary are the same people funding most of the roster. I’d be hesitant to continue throwing money away now.

Such a tired trope.

I think you're going to see less "career" college head coaches and more coaches using it as a springboard to get to the NFL. Coaches just aren't worth the $100m high water mark deals anymore now that you have to pay players to build considerable runs at a NC.

I'd really like to see LSU hire an OC that either has some experience as an HC or is pretty close to it.
And I'm okay if we hire a guy that sits and marinates for a couple years.

Loser mentality. Let everybody else grab the good steak off the table and then you're left with crumbs.

Ok. Who is the can't miss coach this year? Do you trust Woodward to get that person? How much is this coach worth? What even qualifies as can't miss coach in this new era of college football?
One of my points is that the roster is more important than the coach. I'd rather the boosters spend the $53M on a pro team than on Kelly. I don't think that is loser mentality at all.

To be fair, LSU has a front office set up now that resembles an NFL team.

I agree we should wait until mid/post next season to make a change.
And I'd honestly be ok with Blake Baker if the defense is still strong next year with new personnel and we can get him a good young DC and an experienced OC. And keep our front office together.

quote:That's probably the most likely "best case" we can hope for. Kelly isn't leaving IMO, but as I've said elsewhere I'd love to see a real honest-to-god hotshot OC get hired - whether BK does it himself or has one forced on him makes no difference to me.

If we do that, though, we still need to back up the Brinks truck to keep Baker. Other than a mental block on defending running QB's he's had our defense playing really good ball. Bag on him all you want, but who else out there could we realistically hire that gives you 90% of what Baker brings, warts and all?
Just like I hope a good OC gets forced on Kelly, there's got to be some way to get Baker to improve the one area he really struggles with. We have the players to do much better against scramblers on this year's team, so why we get run to death is beyond me. But I'd like to believe it's something that can be corrected, if Baker's willing to acknowledge the problem and then fix it.
So, yeah, IMO we're going to be stuck with Kelly for at least another year, and the best case is that the changes needed to get over the hump are made - even if they're rammed down his throat.
Worst case? We all know where that leads....
Just my opinion.
