Carbon cost of meat in US “Comparable” to the Fossil Fuel Industry

Researchers have quantified how meat consumption in the U.S. is contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.
More than 11 million tons of meat is consumed in U.S. cities annually -- equating to about 329 million tons of carbon emissions, according to a study published Monday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change.
That figure is comparable to emission levels from domestic fossil fuel combustion in the U.S., at about 334 million tons annually, Benjamin P. Goldstein, an assistant professor of environment and sustainability at the University of Michigan and lead author of the paper, told ABC News. In addition, emissions from meat consumption in the U.S. exceed total annual carbon emissions from the U.K., at 305 million tons, and Italy, at 313 million tons, the researchers said.
The three most populated cities in the U.S. -- New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago -- consumed a total of 3.2 million tons of meat per year, according to the paper.
quote:
Researchers quantified and mapped the greenhouse gas emissions of beef, chicken and pork consumption to calculate the "carbon hoofprint" of 3,531 U.S. cities by implementing a high-resolution model to link meat consumption to the specific rural regions that produce the feed, livestock and processed meat.
quote:
Emissions from meat consumption in the U.S. can be reduced by up to 51% through measures such as reducing food waste and shifting diets from beef to poultry, the researchers suggested.

And as far as individual consumption goes, the fundamental advice of focusing on a plant-based diet, and choosing chicken or pork over beef, is still the best way to practice sustainability within eating habits, according to Goldstein.

You steak eating baws are causing just as much destruction to our environment as the huge evil fossil fuel industry.
Switch over to eating bugs and plants, you selfish jerks.

Here we go.
Made the oil industry evil. Now comparing meat industry to them for the comparison effect.

This is dumb for a lot of reasons, but yeah let's compare a huge country with massive population to two tiny countries with low population. The US has 5x the population of both of those countries.

I trade my red meat carbon emissions for not needing to be part of the pharmaceutical industrial complex so I net net even

I literally don’t fricking care about carbon emissions, as long as China and India exist I will never care about any kind of rhetoric regarding emissions

So the made up carbon currency is being used to demonize another staple of modern civilization.
Get Al Gore to foot the bill with his pretend carbon credits.
I’m waiting for the day that leftists abandon meat so prices drop.

What is included in these measurements?

Yeah…that stupidity stood out to me as well.

If only there were a way to naturally filter out all of that carbon emissions. It would be an added bonus if this method could turn it into breathable O2.

Can't have those pesky trees blocking the sun's rays from hitting those solar panels.

I did the rough math. The average American eats about 250 lbs of meat per year. For argument purposes, IF this is ALL beef (which is not the case) this is about half of the yield from 1 cow per American per year. A cow is slaughtered around 2 years old. A cow produces roughly 9,000 lbs of CO2 in a year, so this equates to about 4,500lbs of CO2 per American per year in meat (beef) consumption.
The average car emits roughly 10,000 lbs of CO2 per year (11,500 miles). This is more than twice the meat (beef) consumption. This does not consider car pooling, or fossil fuels that are emitted from non-automobiles.
Myth Busted.

I need around 43 lbs of meat per week to sustain my bulk. Sorry but I’m not making gains sacrifices for some Low T beta cuck citing a flawed study sponsored by bill gates

Bill Gates created alpha gal syndrome and put it in lonestar ticks across the US so we would get red meat allergies and have no choice but to go vegan.
